Tidying old papers, I came across my father's reference on leaving Whittaker's, in 1925! He had been apprenticed as an engineer, and at the end of his seven years, they gave him a job as a "Lurry Driver"! Times were bad in 1923. The reference was signed by Wm. Whittaker, so he was still running things then. My father, Leo Kilgallen, was rather more famous in his sport as a swimmer. Whittaker's was then, of course, a "maker of washing, wringing and mangling machines"
