On Saturday June 6th – the anniversary of D-Day – the North West Military Collectors will perform a World War Two re-enactment in the grounds of St James Church in Accrington as part of the Accrington Food and Drink Festival.American World War Two jeep

North West Military Collectors are a family-oriented group who aim to accurately portray the men, women, equipment and vehicles of World War Two. They will re-enact a battle between up to 15 German troops and 25 American GIs in the grounds of St James’ Church from 1 pm.

This isn’t all that the group will be contributing, as before the event they will be interacting with locals at the Accrington Food and Drink Festival in the town centre giving people the opportunity to talk to them and ask questions about their equipment, weapons and experiences. And it will be hard to miss the re-enactment itself, as the sound of gunfire – blanks of course – will be heard throughout the town.

Peter Hall of the North West Military Collectors said: “We re-enact in order to remember those who fought so that we may have freedom. As John Maxwell Edmonds famously said ‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrows, these gave their today’.”German soldier with gun

As the Accrington Food and Drink Festival falls on the anniversary of D-Day, the event will include a variety of exhibits to commemorate the historic event. Along with the re-enactment there will be an Abbott Self-Propelled Gun – what most people would think of as a tank – on show outside the Town Hall, and a Pegasus Bridge Airborne Replica Jeep at the Hyndburn Heritage D-Day display inside the Arndale Centre .

There’ll also be a “Dig for Victory” attraction outside the Town Hall – Incredible Edibles Accrington and Sandy Lane Gardening Group will have a raised bed of edibles; flowers, herbs and vegetables. Children can come and plant a seed or seedling to take away and have their own Incredible Edible at home. There will also be a cake decorating competition all day inside the Market Hall to keep the children entertained too.
