To be honest, there's no great mystery or secret to producing 'professional' looking photographs and almost everyone can do it, to take your image from 'happy snaps' to 'professional looking'.

A good lens is useful the one I used for these was £800 3 1/2 years ago (Canon Zoom EF 24-105mm f4L).

Understanding how you camera works and moving beyond simiply setting it to Auto (stuff like depth of field, exposure compensation, Auto Focus Points etc etc).

A lot of practice - I've taken 70,000+ in the 3 years 8 months I've had my DSLR.

Post processing your image once you've taken it - this can included everything from changing from colour to mono, to framing the final image.

A good eye, though is probably the most important, seeing a potential in any subject - not just the most obvious.
