As you go up Water street in the direction of the photo up until 1888 you would be in Yorkshire. Over the river, which is Walsden Water, you would be in Lancashire.
The Town Hall behind you has statues depicting Lancashire cotton workers on one side and Wool on the other. The river flows right under the Town Hall and Market before joining the Calder. Originally it was the only town hall to be in two counties at once.
The boundary was changed in 1888 to follow the Town boundary so Todmorden became all Yorkshire.
Strangely enough it has a Oldham post code and telephone soaking code.
I was born in Todmorden early 1939.
