I used to have to pretend to be playing out the back when the coalman came, so that I could count the bags for my auntie (very distrustful, Northern women). Also when she went to the butchers (Ted Charnley) for mince, she always used to say "You run that mincer first, Ted Charnley, I don't want any old muck in with my good meat". Funnily enough, both the coalman and the Charnleys were family friends! Did anyone else have to watch the shopkeeper to see that there wasn't a hand on the scales with the bag of fruit or veg?
