2019/20 Prediction League; Game 20 v Tranmere Rovers (away)

2019/20 Prediction League; Game 20 v Tranmere Rovers (away)

Christmas Joy? Nah! Not in November, and not if you are – or were – a PrawnSandwich Manager …………………. In the space of 12 days, Mauricio Pochettino and Unai Emery - who expressed himself ‘honoured’ to have had 18 months as Arsenal manager (try telling that to Arsenal Winger) departed, and now Quique Sanchez Flores is surgically expunged at Watford, having only been appointed (for his second stint) to replace Javi Garcia on 7th September, and having won just one league game in 10, and – as tellingly - losing (amongst other scores) 8-0 to Man City …….. In an open letter the 54-year-old Spaniard said the club "will always be in my heart" (but the P45 will always be in his pocket) .…………… ‘Qui’ is, of course, French for “who?”, and ‘Que?” is Spanish for “what?” …… and if your manager is named ‘Who?What?’, frankly you’ve got problems ……….. And how can Hearts offering their manager’s job (if he takes it) to ex-Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel (the one that Joey Barton didn’t hit, you’ll remember) entitle Barnsley (who sacked him) to compensation from Hearts? I can see a clause that might make Herr Stendel repay some of the SackingPacket in those circumstances, but don’t follow where Heart of Midlothian’s liability could arise ………… Anyone?

This week’s First Starter for Ten, by the way; who broke the Champions’ League scoring records by hitting four goals in a 6-0 away win in Belgrade this last week, starting with a 53rd minute penalty, and adding further goals on 60, 64 and 67 minutes?

Tranmere is a suburb of Birkenhead (pronounced in Proper Scouse as “Bare-kchen-edd”), on the Wirral Peninsula. Before local government reorganisation on 1 April 1974, it was part of the County Borough of the same name, which in those days was in Cheshire. The name apparently derives from visiting Norwegian Vikings, who settled and colonised (as in “pillaged”) Wirral in the 10th century. Tranmere, in Old Norse, is Trani-melr, meaning "crane (bird) sandbank" or "sandbank with cranes", which sounds like something Heston Blumenthal would create for Waitrose ……….. (“Have you tried his Sandbank with Cranes?” Fab-you-luss!”). Until the early 19th century, Tranmere was the second most populous settlement in Wirral, with a population of 353 in 1801; by 1901, the number of residents had grown to 37,709 ……….. sound like too much sex, if you ask me ………. Not that you did

I rather liked this bit of research, so I share it;

Tranmere Old Hall was situated around what is now Church Road. It was a large, gabled building constructed around 1614. According to the author Philip Sulley's book “The Hundred of Wirral (1889)”;

in about 1860 Tranmere Old Hall was pulled down by an ignorant boor who became possessed of it by some mischance, to make way for shops and houses.’

………………….. That’s telling ‘em, Phil!

Tranmere Rovers was originally formed as Belmont Football Club, when the football sections of two cricket clubs – Lyndhurst Wanderers and Belmont – came together in 1884. On 15 November 1884, they won their first game (a friendly, since there were no leagues until 1888) 4–0 against Brunswick Rovers. An unrelated, disbanded side had played under the pithy name "Tranmere Rovers Cricket Club (Association Football Section)" in 1881–82, and on 16 September 1885, before their second season began, Belmont F.C. adopted this name and morphed seamlessly to become Tranmere Rovers.

They played their first matches at Steeles Field in Birkenhead; in 1887, they bought Ravenshaws Field from Tranmere Rugby Club, and in 1895 renamed their ground Prenton Park, although it was 25 years before the team moved into the current stadium of the same name. Their first kit was blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks; in 1889 they adopted a very (for those days) avant-garde outfit of orange and maroon shirts, but in 1904 they returned to their senses, restoring their original kit. Following the expulsion of Leeds City Reserves in 1919, Tranmere joined the Central League (I remember the Central League! Who else remembers the Central League?) and the following season four Central League clubs – including Tranmere – were invited to join the new Division Three North. Their first game was on 27 August 1921, when they beat Crewe 4–1.

In 1924, one William Ralph Dean made his debut for the Super-Whites, ten days before his 17th birthday. Dean was the grandson of a Ralph Brett, who drove King George V’s Royal Train (apparently!), and is thought to have acquired his nickname (“Dixie”) as a corruption of his childhood nickname of “Digsy”, which he got from the way he played ‘tig’ (he’d “dig” people, especially girls), the alternative story being that it was because his hair and features were perceived as being similar to some inhabitants of the Southern part of the United States; it had nothing to do with fried chicken, I’m pleased to say………………..DD was to play just 30 games for Rovers, scoring 27 goals, before being transferred to Everton – the club he supported as a boy - for £3,000 …………… Second Starter for Ten, then; as well as Tranmere and Everton, which other league side did DD play for during his career?

Having joined the league the Trannies remained there until 2015; their best position ever was 4th in the old First Division (Championship) in 1992/93; they actually reached the play-off three years in a row (92/93, 93/94 and 94/95), losing in the semis on aggregate over two legs to Swindon 5-4 in 92/93, then losing to Leicester 2-1 in 93/94 (also semis), and finally (semis again) 3-1 to Reading (although Bolton went up). They were Seriously GreasyPoled to the Bananarama in 2015, rock bottom on 39 points (won 9, drew 12 and lost 25), but came back up in 2018 via the playoffs, beating Ebbsfleet (“Own the Club, Pick the Team!”) 4-2 in the semis and Borehamtodeath Wood 2-1 in the Final ………… and if that wasn’t enough they went straight up to League One at the end of the following season, also via the playoffs, Doing It Unto Vegan Greenpeace Utd 2-1 over two legs, and then taking out strongly fancied AmondNewportCounty by the odd goal in one in the Finale

Ten left BerkOnHead in the summer, including Rhino (to Morecambe) and Jay Harris (to Macclesfield); in addition, striker James Norwood went to ResurgentIpswich, fellow striker Cole Stockton was incoming at Morecambe, CM Bent Ollitt – sorry, Ben Tollitt – joined the Tangerines, French-born LB Zoumana Bakayogo (who is shown with a Republic of Ireland flag against his name on their current season Wiki page) joined Notts County, and two lost souls joined FC United of Manchester ………….. they brought in nine, who included Villa winger Corey Blackett-Taylor, Sid Nelson, a CB from Millwall (seems right, somehow, that a Millwall CB should be called “Sid”), striker Stefan Payne from Brizzle, ex Crewe CB George Ray (so now we’ve got a Sid and a George), and former Walsall Saddlers’ striker Morgan Ferrier (I used to love contralto Kathleen Ferrier, although I don’t think she played football ………but she did have a range of chocolates named after her - Ferrierreio Rocher ……….)

Their season has been a bit ‘Curate’s Egg’ so far ………… they didn’t win a single pre-season game (actually they only got one draw!); they qualified for Round Two of the Troffy (Bury had been in their group, which helped) and they played Man U Babes, winning 3-2, so they’re in Round 3; they’re also in Round 3 of the FA Cup, having done Wycombe 2-1 aet in a replay and Plucky Chichester 5-1 (they’re away at Watford, so every chance, you’d think – all they really need to do on current form is to turn up!), and they departed the EFL Cup back in mid-August 3-0 at home to Hull…………….. in the League, at home it’s P8 W2 D3 L3 GF14 GA12, and away it’s P9 W2 D1 L6 GF7 GA20, for an overall P17 W4 D4 L9 GF21 GA32 for 16 points and a nervy 20th place, 3 points above MK Dons and 10 above hapless Southend, who’ve still only won one of 19 games, scoring 18 and conceding 53! …… Wins have been at home to Bolton (5-0) and Burton (2-1), and away at Coventry (1-0) and MK Dons (3-1) ……………. And they haven’t won at home in their past three games …………. And they’ve failed to score in six of their League games so far ……………..It’s there to be won!

Famous former managers (of which they had 3 in 2014 alone) include John King (three times), John Aldridge, Dave Watson, Ronnie Moore and John Barnes; current Boss Mickey Mellon was appointed on 7th October 2016 (making him the 12th longest-serving of the 91); he also has the best win percentage of recent times (54.7%) ……… however, don’t go into business with him – he and his wife opened the very first franchised energie Shokk Gym aimed at teenagers in Blackpool in February 2009; the gym went out of business the same October.

Famous former players include John Aldridge and Pat Nevin, plus Harold Bell (if you’re gonna have a Sid and a George, you've for sure got to have a Harold) …………. Bell holds the record for the most consecutive league appearances for a British team, being selected for the first game after WWII in the 1946–47 season and not then missing a match until 30 August 1955 (when he was dropped), a total of 375 consecutive matches in Div3North (401 with ‘other games’) …….. Their biggest-ever League win was 13-4 against Oldham on Boxing Day 1935 (17 goals is still the biggest aggregate score line); they also beat Solihull Moors 9-0 in 2017 …….. Ray Mathias holds their appearance record (637), and as recently as 1991/92 John Aldridge scored 40 goals in a season ………. Sid, George, Harold and Ray, eh? Happy Times

Deadline for entries is, as always, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3.00pm on Saturday 7th December ………….. Their leading scorer is Kathleen (Morgan) Ferrier (maybe I was wrong!) with 6, followed by Stefan Payne with 4 and half a dozen others with three each (including Paul Mullin) …………………. We’ve played them 8 times since our Phoenix Revival, but three of those were in the Johnstone’s Paints Trophy (2008. 2010 and 2011) and three more in the FA Cup (2008 with a replay and 2013) ……… in 2014/15 we won 3-2 at ours (two goals by James Gray, who now plays semi-pro at Frickley Athletic, and one by Kal Naismith) and lost 3-0 at theirs, so even-stevens (if you don’t count GD)

I don’t imagine we’d expect 7-1 again, but we’ve got a taste for winning now, which needs seeing through …………… and did you know that Colby, Bishop of Wham, on eight League goals, is joint seventh on the League One scorers’ list – behind Posh’s Ivan Tony, Mo Eisa and Marcus Maddison (who have a combined 33), Gnanduillet (Blackpool), Fleetwood’s Paddy Madden and Ian Henderson of Rochdale, but ahead of Kaden Jackson, James Norwood (see above), Freddie Ladapo, Tarique Fosu-Henry and You Fat Bastard …….. and more power to your Mitre, Colby Sir ………….. And Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich was the “four times in 14 minutes” scorer (those were the days, eh lads?) ……….. And Dixie Dean played – as well as at Tranmere and Everton (anyone fancy a football manager’s job, by the way – I know where there’s likely to be one going) - for Notts County…………

Good luck to everyone! ……………… Keep the Faith! ……………. And thanks for playing!
