2021/22 Prediction League Game 7; v The Black Cats (away)

Go on then, pick the bones out of that! ...............

The death was announced this week of Senegal-born French footballer Jean-Pierre Adams, who died a few days ago at the age of 73. Forward-turned-defender Adams played for Nice (140 games), Nimes (84) and PSG, and 22 times pour Les Bleus between 1972-76, forming a central defensive partnership with Marius Tresor known as the "Garde Noir" (The Black Guard)....... as his career faded, he decided that he wanted to coach, and in 1982 he attended a coaching course in Dijon; while there, he damaged a tendon in his knee ........... after an x-ray at the Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon he met, by chance, a doctor from the Lyon FC medical team, who quickly arranged for him to be operated on on 17th March 1982; he was 34, and married

On the day of the operation, many of the hospital staff were on strike, but his (non-urgent) surgery carried on. There was one lady anaesthetist available for eight patients, and Adams' immediate care was assigned to a trainee who was repeating a year, who later admitted that he "was not up to the task he was entrusted with"; the anaesthetic procedure was botched to the point that one of the tubes blocked the pathway to his lungs, starving him of oxygen, and leading to a cardiac arrest and brain damage ........ some 15 months later his wife took him home, where she looked after him in his vegetative state for almost forty years - waking, dressing, feeding, turning him every day, preparing his food, talking to him, buying him gifts on his birthday ............ after a long battle (12 years+) she received an annuity; the Variety Club of France has played five or six matches over the years to raise funds for his care .......... in 1989 the medical staff involved were found guilty of "involuntary injury", and in the mid-90s were sentenced to one month suspended and a fine of 750 Euros ........ the reports say that the Hospital has never apologised

Reste en paix, Jean-Pierre ........... and our uncomprehending admiration for the selfless devotion of Bernadette Adams, his wife .......... and, if you're interested, she was white French and he was black Senegalese ..... and if that isn't love, I don't know what is ..............

And if it was goals you were after last Saturday, the BananaramaProper was the place to be ...... ignoring the goalless Desmond between Boringham Wood and Stockport County , and Yeovil's 1-0 thrashing of Halifax, the rest of the games finished

2-2 (Chesterfield v Bromley, and The Daggers v Wealdstone)
3-2 (Altrincham v Dover, and Notts County v Aldershot)
3-3 (Eastleigh Spitfires v King's Lynn)
4-3 (Grimsby v Barnet, Torquay at Maidenhead, and Weymouth at Solihull NoMoors)

And after our three 1-0 wins, perhaps we should watch the videos; 45 goals in nine games ............. oh, and did you see that Bala Town equalled the biggest-ever winning margin in the Welsh Cup when they beat Brymbo (which I mis-read first time as "Bymbo") 17-1 ......

So then, this week's Starter for Ten; what (probably unwanted) record is shared by Marvin Ceballos of Guatemala and Graham Gartland of Drogheda United FC ......... ?

And everyone in Ligue Un has now lost, and three sides have still to win - Donnie, Crewe and Ipswich ....... there is, I understand, some "Muttering in the County of Suffolk", and the Voodoo Gods of Football are probably even now preparing a suitable fate for Cashy's mate The Snake ........... "Something lingering, with boiling oil in it, I fancy" (Who wrote that, and what's it from?)

If you translated para 1 above - or you've read previous Sunderland openers - you'll remember that the club was formed as Sunderland and District Teachers A.F.C. by schoolmaster James Allan in October 1879, and was renamed Sunderland A.F.C. and became open to more than just school teachers a year later. What you may not know is that the aforementioned Pedagogue James Allan went on, in 1888, to form rival side Sunderland Albion FC as well, in direct opposition to Les Chats Noirs ...........

The story goes like this ..... In December 1887 Sunderland AFC beat Middlesbrough in an FA Cup tie: however Sunderland were subsequently disqualified from the rest of the tournament after it was revealed they'd played ineligible professional players called Monaghan, Richardson and Hastings, who had been "imported" from Dumfries for the match. On 13 March 1888 Allan held a meeting at The Empress Hotel in Union Street to form Sunderland Albion. Seven Sunderland players would defect to Albion along with Sunderland AFC's first President, Alderman Potts. The Middlesbrough debacle has always been identified as a main reason for Allan leaving the Committee i.e. Allan and others had a general dissatisfaction about the direction in which the club was heading.

The two clubs were (briefly) fierce rivals – when they were drawn together in both the FA Cup and the Durham Challenge Cup in the 1888–89 season, Sunderland withdrew from both competitions rather than allow Albion to benefit from the increased gate receipts. However, there was so much demand locally for the clubs to play each other that two friendly matches were arranged, both won by Sunderland (2–0 on 1 December 1888, in front of 18,000 spectators and 3–2 on 12 January 1889, in front of 12,000 spectators).

Albion were founder members of the Football Alliance in 1889, but when ProperSunderland joined The Football League in 1890, Albion's crowds began to suffer. To try to gain extra support, Albion joined the Northern League as well as the Alliance, playing in both leagues in the 1890–91 season before concentrating on the latter. However, when Sunderland won the Football League title in 1891–92, Albion disbanded; they'd lasted exactly four seasons ......

Incidentally, Sunderland Albion re-formed in 2020, and now play in the Wearside League ....... how many of the original squad have re-signed isn't currently clear ...

Sunderland - whose fans still haven't quite grasped the idea that there's no automatic right to a place at the Football Top Table - GreasyPoled at the end of 2017/18 with a record of 7 wins, 16 draws and 23 defeats, and GD of -28 (only the fourth-worst in the Division) and 37 points (6 plus goals from safety) ....... last season they finished 4th - ten points and ten goals off the automatic promotion spots; they met Lincoln in the semis, losing 2-0 away and winning 2-1 at home to go out by the odd goal in five .......they changed managers from Phil Parkinson to Lee Johnson at the end of November

A propos de rien; in December 2021, Phil Parkinson's Wrexham will take on Phil Parkinson's Altrincham dans le Bananarama........ Unique? Well, no - because in October (assuming no sackings/resignations) Matt Taylor's Exeter are due to face Matt Taylor's Walsall ....... and even better than that (almost) was 27th September 2020 and 28th January 2021, when Manager P Clement's team C Brugge played Manager P Clement's team C Brugge in the Belgian League .... the expanded version goes wrong, though, because Paul Clement's Cercle Brugge lost twice to Phillipe Clement's Club Brugge that season (and Paul Clement doesn't manage Cercle Brugge any more ... but a quality "near miss", n'est-ce pas?

Sixteen left in the summer, including Charlie Wyke (Sunderland's Player of the Year) who was sold to Wigan (and he's getting a real slagging off (for being useless) from the Sunderland "fans") ...... LB Callum McFadzean went to Crewe, CMF Josh Scowen to Wycombe, CMF Max Power also went to Wigan, RW Chris Maguire joined Lincoln, CMF Jake Hackett went off to Whitby Town (because he couldn't, presumably .......... hack it, I mean!), and DMF George Dobson signed for Charlton

Twelve Proper Signed, two for money (ex Spurs LB Dennis Cirkin and ex Leeds LB Niall Huggins) ...Blackburn MF Corry Evans signed up, as did Alex Pritchard from Huddersfield ...... most of the rest haven't made it yet, because they don't even have Wikipedia pages!

They won 2-1 at Portly Valley and 3-2 at Blackpool in the EFL Cup, and have Wigan (away) in Round 3 on 21st September; in the League, they're on 12 points from 5 games, having beaten Wigan 2-1 at home, the Donuts 2-1 away, the Wombles 1-0 at home and Wycombe 3-1, also at home; their only defeat (so far!) is 1-0 at Burton ........ scored 8, conceded 4 ...... some would have this game as the League One Title Decider - mostly those who have us down as "joint top", with our 12 points from 6 games .... accepting we're the only other side with four wins in the League, we are - sorry to be a killjoy - actually second, not joint top ......... although we could get there and better if we Do It Unto The Mackems ......... as far as the league goes, leading scorer is striker Ross Stewart with 4, followed by AMF Elliot Embleton (no, neither have I), with two

Deadline for entries is, as always, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3.00pm on Saturday 11th September ........... Cashy might want to know that Wearside is a Kettle-Free Zone (he's spoiling Sutton v Stevenage) and that Rebecca Welch is doing the MonkeyHangers v Brizzle (bet Thugface doesn't invite her for a Pitcher of Iced Pimms afterwards!) ... we've got Anthony Backhouse

I'm not going to mention that we've met six times (five in the League and one in the League Cup), drawn two and lost four, and that they've scored two against us twice and three against us four times ..... Law of Averages, right? If you're average, you're gonna get pasted, innit? But we're not - we are the Stanley!

Marvin Ceballos, by the way (Starter for Ten), played for Guatemala against Guadaloupe in the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifying ........... the game went to a penalty shootout, and each side took twelve penalties before the game was decided (Guadaloupe won 10-9) ..... Ceballos was the only player from Guatemala who took two spot-kicks - and he missed them both! Graham Gartland took Drogheda's first and twelfth penalties when they played IK Start in the qualifying round of the Uefa Cup in 2006/07 .......... IK Start won 11-10 ...... and Gartland missed both his pens too!

COYR!

Good luck to everyone! ............. Keep the Faith! ............ And thanks for playing!
