What Does Accyweb Mean To You

Posted 01-09-2008 at 17:35 by Less

This is a complex question for me, & rather than take up a great deal of space within the thread I thought I would reply in a blog so that those that want to read can and those that don't....

Firstly I think a little History, accyweb started around March 2003, it was when Roy and several other of his workmates were working for a while in Moscow, Broadband wasn't in general use at the time and everyone had very expensive dial up modems.

Roy decided as he was an ex-pat he would start a web site so that he and his friends could keep in touch with home.

He was very lucky because his friends were willing to help get it up and running and become moderators.

He was even luckier because very soon after getting the site up and running Mick and Len came across it and proved themselves to be willing to take on the daunting task of permanent moderators, (his workmates like Roy travel the world and can't dedicate as much time to the site).

About two months after setting up the site Roy came home and proudly showed it to me, I was hooked, (not that I had any choice unlike the rest of you I wasn't given a choice I was going to be a member).

I was also asked if I would be a moderator, my reply to this was, "the site already has one member of the family in overall command it doesn't need two of us, you and your mods sort it out I'll help where I can".

Nicely ducked under that one I thought but no, Roy had other plans...

In the mean time the site was going from strength to strength a celebration here and there as we reached 300, 400, wow! 500 members until it has grown into what it is today.

Back to Roy and his plans, "o.k. Dad if you won't be a mod' will you help in the background wherever needed?"

Not knowing how much this would involve I agreed, now most of Mick's spare time and mine is spent in talking accyweb, hows it doing, who's being a pain, (yes it's usually me), what can we do to develop further interest?

It has on the whole been a very fast five years new friends arriving old friends leaving, (sadly in some cases because of the reaper), people coming on that decide they can run the site better and woe betide anyone that tells them different.

(All of it new to some members and them keen to join in, others joining just to try and upset, and the ones keen to join but wanting to be the boss).

For me, accyweb seems to have become a way of life, I have uplifting moments when someone sends me a P.M. saying thank you for a little bit of help I've given and off to the other scale where I sometimes feel heartbroken and unappreciated because someone claims I am only allowed to get away with things because of my relationship with Roy.

If I could speak about how what and why goes on in the background of such a busy site I would, but then once you know the secret I would have to ban you!

O.K. there is plenty more but this will do for a start if you want to know anything specific P.M. me and I'll try to answer (or dump it onto someone else).

I will finish for today by thanking Roy for the idea, all the mods for their unceasing hard work, but mainly you the members for being there, without each other accyweb would not survive.

Great blog Less........and Accyweb is a great place to be even with the 'pains' that sometimes frequent it......(I don't consider myself in this group of people ).
Thanks to Roy for his brilliant idea, and also to the mods who do a valuable and sometimes, thankless job.
Where would we all be without them?
    (doing more housework I guess)
