The worm that turned...

Posted 22-08-2005 at 16:25 by lettie

Not long after I'd telephoned Andrea from Asda, she gave birth to a little girl. I had to go to my mum's to pick up my giro. Mark had told me to say that I still lived with my mum because you got less money if you were cohabiting. On the mantlepiece was a note from my mum saying that Andrea had phoned from the hospital. and was now at Accy Vic. I phoned Accy Vic and asked what time I could visit.

I mooched around town waiting for visiting time. I had made myself a brew at my mum's and mooched around the house, but I knew that it was the first place Mark would come looking for me when I didn't go home with the money straight away, so I wandered round town killing time. I went to the jobcentre and found an advertisement for nurse training. It was not something that I'd ever considered before but I saw one of the advisors and spoke to her. I already had all of the necessary qualifications, so I gave her mum's address and she phoned and requested an application form for me.

I went to see Andrea that afternoon. She was shocked at how thin I was. Baby Gemma was sound asleep so we went to the dayroom and got a brew. I told her everything and spared no detail. It was such a relief to finally be able to tell someone. Andrea was appalled and immediately helped me to make plans for leaving. She would be going home from hospital the following day and that would be the day I escaped..

I went back to my mum's and hid the money that I had got from my giro. I then went back to the flat... Mark was in a hell of a mood and was waiting for me. I told him that my giro hadn't come and that I'd been to the social to sort it out. I told him that I had been kept waiting for nearly 2 hours and that I had to fill in some more forms and they said that it would come next week. I mentioned nothing about Andrea or the baby.. Mark seemed to find the story feasable. He had had a couple of errant giros in the past, so he muttered something about incompetent b**stards and let it drop.

The following night Mark went out with his friends. I collected up some small things, jewellery that I had got for my 18th, any spare money that I could find and put them in my handbag. I left my handbag near the door of the flat.

When he came home he was paralytic I offered to make him a brew, so that I could check that he had left the key in the back of the door, and he had. I let him get undressed for bed and then I told him that I had requested an application for nurse training. Well, it tipped him over the edge, shift work, lots of young doctors around etc and he flew into a rage. Stood there in his undies, he threw an ornament which caught the side of my head. I ran for it, grabbed my bag and hoofed it out of the door, down the fire escape and over the back gate without even opening it. It was the middle of the night and I ran across the road to the taxi place.

I had just jumped into a taxi when he came running across the road in his underpants, razor in hand and blood trickling from fresh scratches on his wrists.

"If you leave, I'll bloody well kill myself," he shouted.

I leaned out of the taxi window, looked him in the eye and said,

"Be my guest you pathetic, bedwetting loser.........."

The taxi took me to mum's and I had to knock her out of bed as she'd bolted the door. She was so relieved and surprised to see me. I knew that Mark would follow me there and told her that on no account was she to say that I was there. I didn't tell her what had happened. Mum said that she would tell him that I was at Andrea's and that she didn't know where Andrea lived.

Sure enough, Mark turned up. My mum let him in and said that I had phoned her from Andrea's and had got her out of bed. I could hear him talking calmly to mum, saying that he was worried about me and that he thought that I had some sort of psychiatric illness and was anorexic. My mum said that she would probably see me tomorrow and would take me to the doctor. Mark went home eventually........

To be continued..........

Weak, sad little man. I hope he gets his reward at the end of all this, but being real life I doubt it.
Someone as strong and together as you seem, has changed my opinion of the type of people this happens to.
    Heartbreakingly written Lettie.

I agree with the other 2 comments, this is addictive reading, just so much wish it was fiction and that things like this just didn't happen
