Homecoming..

Posted 25-08-2005 at 12:55 by lettie

Fantastic news!!!!! Sparky is coming home on tonights boat. He will be back for a week, and he sounds knackered. He has phoned this morning and I screeched off Whitebirk roundabout and onto the car park at the Red Lion in order to take his call. Honestly he only ever rings when I'm driving or on the petty.....

He was phoning to ask if I like Champagne, which I had to admit I'm not that keen on. I can get it down but I always think it smells a bit farty (even the good stuff). It gets me mega drunk and I always have a massive headache the following day. He is bringing home some wine instead. We had to terminate the call when he wandered into the chocolate section of the shop. I couldn't stand all the oooohing and aaaaahing and yummy noises coming at me.

Typically, he couldn't be coming home at a worse time. I am on a late shift tomorrow, late sunday then I'm working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. He will be going back to France next Sunday and they may be moving him to another job. It's all up in the air and he doesn't know. I was hoping to go to France with him for a few days when he goes back, but because of all the potential moving about, that has now gone out of the window.

I will be on holiday after Wednesday night and I can't bear the thought of staying at home. I wanted to go somewhere work can't get me, so I've booked a week away on my own. I'm off to Malta next Saturday night. I'm looking forward to it as I've never been to Malta. I just wish that Sparks could come with me.

Going away on my own doesn't bother me, I live on my own so really it's no different. I have been to plenty of places solo, NZ, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Greece, Spain and I've never had a problem. It sometimes bothers other people though, my dad was worried sick when I went to NZ, my colleagues at work are torn between thinking it's a marvellous idea, but not having the guts to do it themselves and there's no way they would even consider it.

I have only had one incident abroad when somebody has said something a bit off. Funnily enough it was last year in Menorca. I was sitting in a restaurant at night, and while waiting for my food I was reading a book and sipping a nice glass of red. I heard a rather loud female voice 3 tables away say...

"Look at that woman over there! On her own in a restaurant, I don't know how she can sit there, taking up a table for 2 in a busy place like this."

Looking up I saw that the voice belonged to a rather obese 30 something woman who was sat at a table for 4 with just 2 other people sitting opposite her. The 2 others were 60 something, also obese and there was a striking family resemblence between them and the speaker.

I ate my meal and finished my wine. I left a good tip for the waiter who shook my hand as I was leaving. On the way out I passed the offending woman, she was facing me and as I approached I smiled and said.....

" I can't help noticing that there are only 3 of you sitting at a table for 4, I know that you can't help your @rse taking up 2 seats, but if you lost some weight and gained some confidence you also may be able to holiday alone or with friends, rather than your parents." "Have a nice evening."

I stolled back to my apartment smirking. I'm a terrible person sometimes, but she asked for it....

WELL DONE, WHAT A FAB COMMENT!!! I have gone abroad once on my own about 3 years ago. The kids had gone away for the week with my parents so I just got on a plane and went for 4 days. It was great but I got the same responses you did from friends
