Making the best of it..

Posted 13-09-2005 at 15:43 by lettie

We were so depressed on the first day of our holiday that we could barely find the words to say anything to each other. We left our crummy apartment as soon as we were dressed and wandered off for a look around.

We ended up walking around the St Paul's Bay area. It was heavily built up but quiet with being a Sunday. We were both desperate for a coffee and food, but couldn't find anywhere that was open. We finally came across a little scruffy cafe type place on the seafront. It was full of Maltese kids who were jumping from the rocks into the sea, and kept running into the cafe to buy sweets. I had a much needed coffee, bacon, egg, beans and sausage with toast. I felt much better afterwards but there was really nothing going on here apart from rock bathing.

We were both thoroughly naffed off and walked slowly back to our apartment to see if we could salvage any of the sunloungers round our pool. Whilst we were there, we met a family who had been there for a few days already. They were also mortified about the apartments and were intending to complain. They gave us directions into Bugibba, so we went for another walk.

Bugibba is also heavily built up, but it is like Blackpool with the sun. Shops selling candyfloss, crepes, kebabs........ Loads of cafes and restaurants, dodgem cars, Big Macs, volleyball, boules and shop after shop. We weren't too impressed with all of this, but we did find somewhere nice to eat that night. We also found the bus stops, so, determined not to be depressed, we decided that we would just have to make the best of it and get around.....

What a shame you didn't like Malta. I go twice a year and I love it - but I stay in Melieha, I'm not too fond of Buggiba. I do recommend the Villa Maré in "Geriatric Square" though. Wonderful lasagne.
