I must be mad

Posted 23-01-2005 at 22:29 by lettie

Worked a long day today, I must be crackers. I can't believe I am so tired as it has been a nice shift for a change. How on Earth could the government expect us to work until we are 65. I think it will be dangerous working in acute areas at that age. I know plenty of people who are struggling and they are much younger. All I can say is that it will certainly put patients at risk. I can just imagine someone of 65 trying to run the length of the ward with the defib, she would probably need use of it herself after that. There are people at work who can't do shifts on labour ward due to bad backs etc and they are all significantly younger than 65.
My mum has had the dog for the afternoon. She's sleeping in her chair now as she's probably...

Tainted Life

Posted 21-01-2005 at 20:51 by lettie

Reading a good book at the moment. I'm finding it difficult to put down. It is the biography of Marc Almond and it is totally brilliant. I have only read 5 chapters so far, so he's still in his late teens/early 20's and my God, what a life!!!! I have to admit that this book is really bringing back some memories of all the really early Soft Cell stuff which I'd almost forgotten existed. I don't often get the chance to sit down and read a book these days, what with University starting again yesterday. I was way too brain dead to even write in my blog.
The dog urine situation is getting a bit peculiar now. People on the field are starting to look at me like I have some sort of fetish and the poor dog can't have a pee in peace. The good...

Intensive Day

Posted 19-01-2005 at 19:15 by lettie

Did my shift as a visitor to the Intensive Care Unit today. Really enjoyed it but did feel like a fish out of water. It is 14 years since I've worked on a ward with male patients on it. The staff were all brilliant and eager to show me their equipment and care routines which differ a hell of a lot to ours. The only thing that bothered me a bit was that the nurses had absolutely no autonomy. Everything was dictated by the Anaesthetists and despite the nurses being very experienced, even something as simple as drops to keep the eyes moist while the patients are unconscious had to be prescribed by a doctor. I don't think I could stand to work like this. It's only through going there today that I realise just how many decisions midwives make as...

This week is becoming fraught....

Posted 18-01-2005 at 11:49 by lettie

I am starting to get a bit anxious today. I have taken the dog out this morning and I have noticed that when she peed in the snow there is quite a lot of blood in her urine. I am not a vet, but I know enough to know that it is not good. I have to go to work in 10 mins, so I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow after work. I will have to take some leave in the afternoon. I am working in Intensive Care Unit tomorrow. I haven't been there since 1988 when I did a week as a student nurse in there. Every now and then delivery suite staff have to do an Intensive care day. Our poorly ladies don't go to intensive care, we keep them on delivery and do the intensive care there, so that we are not separating the mums from their babies. Therefore we go...

I love it when.......

Posted 16-01-2005 at 09:02 by lettie

A plan comes together. I have been busy lately, between us Sparky and I are planning our New Zealand trip in March. I can't wait to go back, it's a beautiful place. I have been e mailing motels for reservations, the hire car and ferry tickets to South Island are sorted now. Never got to South Island last time, but did a passable job of exploring the North. I stayed at my step brothers in Auckland and again we will be flying into Auckland and using their house as a base. It's different this time as our Lee and his family are coming back to the UK for a visit 2 days after we arrive, so we won't feel obliged to spend all of our time on the North Island with them. We have planned an itinery of where we want to go. Believe me, there is an awful...
