Trials and tribulations of growing Sunflowers ...

Posted 17-09-2010 at 14:10 by shillelagh

Back in april when i was out shopping i saw a packet of mixed sunflower seeds.. It had 70 in it .. a mixture of coloured, giant, dwarf and teddy sunflowers .. so i thought why not .. and bought them... see what comes up ... now looking at them thats famous last words aint it ..

So weeded the front .. chucked a big bag of peat in .. and threw the seeds in .. great care of the giant ones and the coloured ones .. not in front of the living room window.. i do want to see out ... i put the dwarf and teddy ones there .. have grown the giant ones before .. the photo of my niece in front of em .. was 7 years ago.

Come june i saw them sprouting .. counted them there was 40!!!! i was wondering what would happen .. didnt seem to need thinning out ... and they started getting taller and taller ... i staked them up ... and oh my .. you should have seen how tall ... my sister came up to my house .. and walking down the path i heard her say .. its like a forest .. out of the 40 that sprung up .. it went down to 35 ..

When sam was up here we got the tape measure out ... and with his help managed to see how tall one of them was .. 8ft 6inches ... on the seed packet it said 6ft ...

The dwarf ones came out first .. was reading a website about them .. and it said that sunflowers open up facing east .. yeah right .. ive got some facing the house and some facing the road .. and now the big ones are starting to come out .. but with the weather .. all that wind .. its knocked a few of em down .. lost a couple last week .. snapped the stems and now the some of the others are bent and knocked down .... but they seem to be still coming out ...

The photos are of them growing up .. except the one of my niece in her school uniform .. that was took 7 yrs ago .. tho she wanted her photo took with this years crop ... i'll do another blog with the after the wind pics ... the pics were up to 2 september...
