A boxing day stroll

Posted 01-01-2014 at 00:17 by shillelagh

well what can I say .. its my own fault .. since the kelpies have been built I said I wanted to go and see them. So the spugster said if its fine on Thursday we'll go .. walk up and then walk onto Falkirk and walk back .. I looked at him and thought you want me to hike roundabout 10miles on boxing day .. really? then he tried bribing me saying we can have costa coffee when we in Falkirk

Thursday dawned ... it was fine we had blue skies for a change, the sun was shining well a bit and so we set off about 12.15pm ...

Well he took off its a boxing day stroll I shouted after him .. it was like follow my leader .. he took off I couldn't keep up as long as I could keep him in sight I knew where I was going. Down the avenue, along the main road, down a street, under the M9 motorway, following a path that had a bit of a stream running alongside it, past a house that had an unfriendly dog who barked like mad as I walked past - spugster was waiting for me at the corner .. and when I reached him cant you walk quicker it'll be dark by the time we reach there.. along the back side of Falkirk football clubs stadium and dodge the lorries turning into the lorry depot that was on that street, and back onto the main road. Took a bit to cross that main road .. to say it was boxing day there was a lot of cars on the road all heading to Falkirk to the sales. Crossed that and down we went onto another path .. this was part of the helix he said which way do you want to go .. a big puddle at the beginning of one path .. the other no puddle but was the longest way. Well I could see there was an island in the puddle .. we went the short way! It actually looked like the road to nowhere this path there was no one else on it looked like they took one look at the puddle and didn't want to risk it .. He said look can you see them .. I said where .. he said you sure you had your eyes tested ... over there .. over the top of the buildings ..and you could just about see them over the top of these buildings. We carried on walking and saw quite a few people then we joined the main route in the helix .. there was a lot of people about .. all out for a boxing day stroll to see the kelpies.

Its a nature park as well .. theres going to be quite a few carparks in there .. but its based on marshland and theyre at the far end. If anyone is planning to go and see them flat shoes are a must, and expect to walk quite a bit of the way... theyre based at the basin on firth of forth canal ... and so we walked over a wooden jetty around the marshland .. and round ... and up the side of the canal .. not on the canal side though that at the moment is fenced off and this is where it gets a bit interesting. To carry on .. we were following everyone else a fence had fallen ..and people were walking across it to carry on along the path to the kelpies and to the basin.

Spugster carries on .. Im following .. and the kelpies were there before me. Still a bit to go .. but the picture of them 'feeding' that's the first id seen them close up ... So carried on and the path went round ..over a bridge and then dropped down at the basin .. I took my time I was playing with my new camera the spugster had bought me for crimbo.... and I was still using the old camera as well. Anyway I saw the spugster had hit the bridge so tried to catch up with him still taking pics. Saw him down by the canal .. and these 2 blokes were down there in yellow jackets .. security bods. I took a couple more pics .. turned round and the spugster had disappeared .. where the hell was he .. hadn't the foggiest where he was .. thought well i'll go down to the canal and see if I can see him because there was portakabin down there and couldn't see across the canal. Took 5 steps one of the security blokes said you cant go no further you shouldn't be here .. this is a building site you shouldn't be here its health and safety. I said im looking for my boyfriend hes around here somewhere he was here a minute ago ..where the hell is he .. security bod: there is no one round here you must leave now (even though there was a family of 6 with young kids down there feeding the swans). I said I saw him he was over there pointing to the lock gates .. then I spotted him between boats on the other side of the canal ... I said there he is .. can I not just go over there ..pointing to the bridge the spugster had crossed to get to the other side ...my phone rings its the spugster laughing his head off saying hello... security bod I cant let you go any further you have to go back the way you came and go across the blue bridge .. I said you let him go across .. no we didn't and how did you get up here anyway its all fenced off theres signs to say no entry its a building site .. I said I didn't see any theres no signs along there. 2nd security bod: they've nicked the signs again ..im going to have to get some proper ones and get that fence back up. 1st security bod: hes my boss I cant let through if he wasn't there I would do but please go back the same way you came and you'll have to meet him at the blue bridge so I took pity on him ..and left him to his angry boss and telling the other walkers that they couldn't go no further. Spugster on the phone .. said go back the way we came .. and when you get to that fence we walked over go up the other side ..and then id be on the canal side at least .. not the same side but still where I couldn't get lost...

Thing is this path winds around and around you cant go on a straight path .. not like the spugster on the canal path .. So he was stood on the canal path waiting for me to appear. I took pity on some of the pensioners who were walking up to the kelpies and told them they couldn't get on the canal path that they had to come back the way we had come .. I got short shrift off some of them if I want to go along the canal I will do .. others thanked me and said oh we just want to see the kelpies.

Made it back to the fence we'd walked over and up onto the canal bank. Walked down the canal to the blue bridge and the spugster shouted across wait there ..i'll come over .. so back together again .. spugster said we're not going to Falkirk .. theres rain coming in .. look at them clouds coming over them hills ... The helix will have a costa coffee in there .. when its finally open .. but at the moment there is a caravan selling coffee, tea, biscuits cakes and doing a roaring trade. We got a coffee each to warm us up .... it was getting nippy and theres a big manmade pool so we wandered round there while drinking our coffee and me taking pics ... funny thing we noticed as well ..theres no bins in the helix except for round the picnic area yet. So we ended up carrying the empty cups to the bin on the path leading into the helix where the puddle was. And off home we wandered ...

We got back just after 3pm .. all in all it was about a five mile boxing day stroll ...

Phew, that was one long hike Jen.....it wasn't a stroll, it was a route march.it would have needed more than a Costa coffee to bribe me.
It would have needed the whole of the Costa Brava.
    Great pics by the way.

that's really not the whole story ... turned out the spugster had actually talked his way across the bridge.. the security bods thought he'd walked along the canal side and come over the bridge to take a picture of the heron that was down there and they told him to go back across the bridge cos he was on a building site. that's how he got across the bridge lol

oh and hes just read this .. and had two comments about this ... one its your own fault cos you were too busy snapping piccies ... second you haven't mentioned the dogging site ... that he took me through twice ... once on the way there and again on the way back .... and tells me that its well known for it being a dogging site when we'd walked through it and back on the road again ....

but at the aching legs have eased ...
