Hospital Adventure

Posted 31-07-2005 at 17:23 by Tinkerbelle

I had to blog my little hospital adventure as it all seems such a whirlwind and very surreal now! I woke up Tuesday morning with a tummy ache that I thought was just bad menstrual cramp but as the day wore on I knew it was the dreaded pains back. I had been having bad tummy pains for about 12 month and after a visit to the GP Unit and a visit to the doctor the only explanations were water infections or gall stones I was even sent for an ultra-sound scan to see what was wrong but was given the all clear.

I said my good byes to Rindy in chat on Tuesday night after telling him I was going to find something to do he he he little did I know what it would be! At 5am I woke up in the most excruciating pain I have ever felt (and bare in mind I have given birth to 4 children) I was led rigid in pain I couldn't move a single part of my body and was literally crying in agony, I know now I probably should have rung an ambulance but didn't. Eventually the pain eased a little and first thing in the morning I made an appointment with my own doctor which wasn't until 4.30pm later that day. I can honestly say the hours passed in a blur I was in so much pain. I got to the doctors, it took one press on the sore bit, I must have gone green .... they had to peel me off the ceiling!! The doctor rang straight up to BRI's ward 1 which is an assessment unit. I was still trying to convince myself at this time that it was just an infection, that they would give me atibiotics and send me on my way .............. I don't do hospitals

Before I knew it, it was 8pm at night I'd had a very strong pain killer injected into my butt, I hadn't even seen the hospital doctor so I still didn't know what was wrong and Ian had to leave to look after the kids ........ alone, feeling thoroughly miserable and scared I had a good cry........ I know mardy arse but I felt a little better afterwards

The registrar came round had a quick poke and prod and was still none the wiser and said he wanted me in theatre that night to find out what it was going on, he had it narrowed down to three things appendix, fallopian tube or small bowel obstruction.

Gowned and prepped, the theatre porter Paul came to wheel me down ....... well always the flirt and a sucker for a cute male face I had an interesting ride down to theatre Paul and my nurse Barbara found it very funny that they could see the sheets trembling because I was so nervous. I had to wear a very fetching theatre cap because I have long hair and Paul was threatening to take a pic on his phone and send the pic to all my mates mobiles lol! After Paul promiseing he would have a coffee ready for when I came round in recovery, the anaesthetist put me to sleep. Next thing I'm waking up and first thing I saw was Pauls grinning face, I just asked him "well ....... wheres my coffee?" he said I couldn't have one yet so I called him a little tease ......... well it had the theatre staff creased over laughing .... hence the nurse telling Ian I had come round very quickly! We carried on with the banter and laughing all the way back to the ward, I just hope one day I can buy him a beer for easeing my nerves so much

When the registrar that had operated on me came for a post op visit he told me it had been my appendix and that I had been extremely lucky that it had not ruptured ....... I won't go into gory details but after 12 months of infection in it, it was BAD!

Thursday afternoon visiting time Ian brought the children to see me, poor little mites, I couldn't keep my eyes open! Morphine has a very weird effect on me were I can be awake one minute and then fast asleep the next within a split second, it really is embarrassing !! Thursday evening visiting Ian came with my Dad who brought me the most beautiful bouquette of flowers, everyone who came onto the ward commented on how lovely they are During the evening visit the affects of the morphine was starting to ware off, I wasn't feeling 100% and I had a doctor telling me she wanted some blood ...... now I am the best needle dodger ever, I tried the nice approach with the jumed up madame first but she wasn't playing ball. Doctors shouldn't try to take blood they are useless! She tried in my arm first ..... buggered that up and has left me with a massive bruise then she went to try in the back of the hand ......... and buggered that up, more bruiseing! I'd had enough!!! I snapped!!! Much to the amusement of my Dad and Ian she left with her tail between her legs after threatening that she'd send someone round for the blood in the morning Later that evening another nurse appeared with yet another needle "and what is that for" i asked getting ready for another verbal conflict .... round 2! It was an anti-coagulant and was horrified when she said the needle was going into my belly. I grumbled very loudly about the needles .. "first my butt, then my arms and then back of my hands!! What do they think i am a pin cushion? Have I upset them? Was this revenge?" Luckily it was a good natured nurse so I let her stick the needle in my belly after she said it wouldn't hurt ....... and in all honesty it didn't hurt !

By the time Ian, Mum, Brother, Sis and Bro-In-Law (only 2 visitors to a bed lol) came for a visit on Friday evening I was back to my usual self! Laughing and joking about how the nurses kept asking if i had farted yet EXCUSE ME TINKS DOESN'T FART and joking about having a BBQ on the car park, I was very serious Friday night was spent with the night staff sat on my bed watching Big Brother eviction on the TV eating crisps and quality street. After settleing down for the night it was only by chance I glanced at my mobile for the time ....... a txt message OFF RINDY I waited for the microwave to finish it's last ping when I knew the night staff would be in a little side room having their food and txted him back ......... yes I know it's naughty and mobiles should be switched off in hospital but no-one was on a life support machine on my ward so I thought I would chance it No-one died so I sent him another one then heard the nurses moving about but I went to sleep with a smile on my face

I'm feeling better but still very swollen and sore and much more tired than usual. Each day is better than the last one so I should be 100% very soon
