My son rang me tonight. He and his wife live on the far side of Manchester, near Oldham, so I don't see them as often as I'd like.
They've been married 10 years but have, in fact, been together for almost 20 years. There are no children. My daughter-in-law had been married before she met my son and had had a little boy, when she was only 18, who had died at 6 months old. It's complicated but they decided against having a family of their own.
My son's a Rock star. Perhaps "star" is going a bit far but he's a very competent guitarist and plays in an AC/DC tribute band which does extremely well in a semi-pro capacity. They toured Hungary last year (the lead singer is Hungarian) and, apparently, went down "a storm". By day, my son is an HGV driver, the only career he (Grammar School educated) ever wanted and he says it's like being paid for a hobby. All in all, he's a fairly tough cookie.
He rang tonight because Harvey has died. They have had Harvey for nearly 18 years and he was nearly 21. His sister, Felix, disappeared 12 months ago and that was hard to take but now Harvey had reached the end of the road and the vet couldn't do any more for him.
Harvey was a large tabby cat. He was, believe it or not, named after the cricketer Neil Fairbrother, who my son was at school with, and whose middle name is Harvey.
My tough cookie son says, "Well, now we can go on holidays without hassle." No, he says, they won't get another cat but, on the way back from the vet's tonight, they bought a bottle of brandy - to soften the blow - and, of course, he needed to talk to Mum, just to get it off his chest.
