Buzzards

Posted 06-10-2009 at 20:08 by West Ender

The buzzards were circling again yesterday. I was pottering about in the garden when I heard their cries, like kittens mewing, and there were 4 of them wheeling around against the blue sky.

There was no attack from crows this time, though I've seen that happen before, they just floated on the thermals, hardly moving their wings at all but performing large and small circles and figures of 8. They were there for about half an hour, right above me, so it was an excuse to sit on the bench and watch them.

They are quite big birds with a wingspan of over 3'. I know we had at least one breeding pair within half a mile of here but it now looks like we may have two. A couple of years ago Laura and I were walking through the fields across the road (there is a public footpath) when we saw a lone buzzard flying around. It landed on a tree branch but took off again as we got nearer then it hovered over the next field, suddenly swooped, and took off with a rabbit in its talons. I'd never seen that before, it was amazing.

No chance of seeing buzzards today. The rain came down like stair rods all day except for about half an hour at lunchtime. It stopped raining and there were patches of blue sky then it started raining again and we had a brief rainbow. Everywhere is soggy and the grass needs cutting.
