Claire's 21st

My granddaughter-in-law elect was 21 last week and she had her party on Saturday night at a firm's sports and social club in Warrington. Nik, Laura and I were duly invited.
We decided to get a taxi there and back. Gordon Bennett what a price!
The single trip was £11 - twice. Still, it meant Nik and I could both have a drink.
We arrived at 8 o clock and were met by the birthday girl and Peter when we got into the room. We handed over the present (gold earrings) and found our Jo and John, sitting at a table near the bar. Pete came and sat with us and we chatted for about 15 minutes until the disco started. Oh my ears! I mean, I've had my moments with Rock'n'Roll, jived to Elvis, twisted to the Beatles, gyrated to Abba but never at ear-splitting level. At one point the vibrations from the bass were travelling from the floor up, through my feet and legs, and hitting my ear drums from below. Dear god, it's got to be harmful!
Anyway, thank God, it was turned down a little after about half an hour. You still couldn't talk but at least the pain was less.
At 9 o clock a lovely buffet was served. It had all been prepared by Claire and her mum and it was superb. There were about 80 people there and the food would have stretched to 3 times as many.
I saw Claire's father, though I didn't get the chance to meet him. I knew who he was straight away as Pete was talking to him and looking up at him, which is very rare as Pete is 6ft. 4. Claire's dad is 6ft. 8 and rather dominates the room. She's about 5ft. 10 herself so if Pete and Claire ever have children I think we can assume they'll be tall.
We left at just after 11 p.m. Laura was, by this time, drooping and I was ready for sleep myself - I can't stay up very late these days. A most enjoyable evening.
