Growing and Nurturing

I bought a new little growhouse yesterday. I had two but the smaller, older one was getting past it with holes in the plastic cover and a few rusty bits on the struts. Anyway I got an almost identical one (19.99 at the Home Base) except its cover is not clear, it's sort of checkered with green plastic, but lets plenty of light in.

My cactus collection is in there now, along with the 4 baby tomato plants and 3 baby cucumbers. The slightly bigger growhouse is housing tiny geraniums and petunias and now, also, seed trays containing sweet pepper, cabbage and sweetcorn seeds all sown today.

The cacti are interesting. One pot has a couple of opuntia (flat-ish, look like rabbit ears) and I grew them from seeds of a prickly...

The Funeral

We always had animals when I was a child. Apart from the pigs and geese in the pen at the bottom of the garden, which were followed by the hens we kept for many years, there was always at least one cat in the house and, mostly, a dog.

I first remember a little brown terrier called Nipper who, sadly, died of distemper and was followed by a beautiful collie we called Laddie. He had been handed in at Church police station as a stray, was obviously a trained sheep dog and was too much for my mother to handle so was given away to a local farmer after 2 months. Then we got Wendy, my black Cocker Spaniel, bought for me for Christmas when I was 6 years old and my faithful companion for the next 12 years. A succession of cats reigned...

Easter Memories

Posted 12-04-2009 at 21:32 by West Ender

My most memorable Easter, since childhood, was about 20 years ago, maybe just a little more. We had a touring caravan in those days, a 14' Monza, and we made good use of it. It had an awning as big as itself and, inside, gas heating, an electric hook-up for where ever possible, a TV that would work off a 12v battery if necessary and every utensil you could wish for.

That particular Easter we decided to go to the North York moors, just above Whitby. We would stay at a small campsite at Grosmont, next to Goathland where Heartbeat is filmed. It was quite cold for April but it didn't matter as the van was always warm. There would be just me, Colin and Nik, who was about 9, as the older 2 had better things to do.

The...

Sowing Conkers

Posted 07-04-2009 at 21:18 by West Ender

Spring is here and my growing instincts are surfacing like the sap up the apple tree. There are 4 tomato plants and 2 cucumbers growing in pots on the kitchen window sill and I've planted carrot seeds and seed potatoes in containers in the garden. The potatoes are in a rubble sack, to be honest, and another lot will be planted the same way next month.

The carrots are in a large plastic box that, some years ago, the Council supplied to us to collect newspapers. That recycling scheme eventually died (we now have others) but they never collected the boxes to recycle them. No wonder my Council Tax is so high. There's also perpetual spinach seeds planted in the side garden, opposite the kitchen door. I love spinach.

Doggy Weekend

Posted 29-03-2009 at 21:35 by West Ender

We've had our Travis overnight. His mum and dad were going to Gloucester, to a party, and Peter was working over the weekend so he came to us.

Travis is mostly white with a few black spots (more like flecks) on his legs and dark brown patches over his ears and eyes. He was looking distinctly grey, especially around the bottom area, so we decided to give him a bath. He hasn't got a bath at home, his mum and dad have a shower room without a bath, so he doesn't get anything more than a hose down when he's really filthy.

We got him in the bathroom and I filled the shower/bath with warm water. I put the rubber non-slip mat in so he would feel more secure and wouldn't scratch the bath. Nik, meanwhile, undressed him...
