Buzzards

Posted 06-10-2009 at 20:08 by West Ender

The buzzards were circling again yesterday. I was pottering about in the garden when I heard their cries, like kittens mewing, and there were 4 of them wheeling around against the blue sky.

There was no attack from crows this time, though I've seen that happen before, they just floated on the thermals, hardly moving their wings at all but performing large and small circles and figures of 8. They were there for about half an hour, right above me, so it was an excuse to sit on the bench and watch them.

They are quite big birds with a wingspan of over 3'. I know we had at least one breeding pair within half a mile of here but it now looks like we may have two. A couple of years ago Laura and I were walking through...

Mrs Muscles

Posted 05-10-2009 at 21:32 by West Ender

I went to the doctor's last Friday. I had a chest infection in late July and I hadn't been feeling all that well ever since. I saw the Respitory Nurse at the hospital a few weeks ago and she suggested I see the GP. She also took a sputum sample from me (I know, it's horrid, forget I said it, OK?).

Anyway, I digress. I saw one of the young doctors who replaced my old, now retired GP. He's a very nice boy (about Nik's age, he's a boy to me) and has a very sympathetic manner but doesn't treat me like a decrepit old fart just because I'm on the wrong side of 65. He hadn't been notified about the sample results so he rang the Path Lab, while I was there, and was told no cultures grew so there was no infection still lurking. ...

More Trivia

Posted 04-10-2009 at 20:24 by West Ender

It's officially Autumn, we've put the garden table and chairs in the garage. We only ate out once this year and we haven't used the barbecue since 2007. Climate change? It's not global warming, not in Lymm anyway.

Nik finished off the cleaning with the new pressure sprayer this afternoon. The flags under the table and chairs were getting slippery with a film of algae from all the wet. They're clean now and it all looks very nice.

The cat's not very happy. She likes to be outside and, when the table's there with its big umbrella, she sits on the table and is sheltered. Now, when she gets caught in the rain, she's going to have to sit under a bush. You can't look regal and sniff the air like a duchess...

My Last Ginger - and The New One.

It's over 30 years since we got our Murphy. We'd been on holiday and the current canine at the time, our Penny, had been in the local boarding kennel. We went to pick her up that evening and while they were fetching her we noticed a large cage containing a white cat and 3 kittens, one white and 2 ginger. There was a notice on the side of the cage, "Kittens 8 weeks old 50p".

Nik was only about 2 years old and she was very taken with the kittens. We'd lost our last cat some years earlier; a lovely white and ginger, he'd gone out one evening and we never saw him again, never found out what happened to him but that was in rural North Yorkshire. My husband looked at the kittens, looked at me then, solemnly, handed me 50p...

A New Family Memeber

Posted 30-09-2009 at 21:51 by West Ender

They've been preparing for the new arrival for weeks, running round getting things ready, as you do. Finally, everything was done and Peter and Claire could sit back and just look forward to the arrival of their addition to the family.

Claire's been posting about it on Facebook at her mum's because they didn't have a telephone landline for the computer. Pete hasn't been able to post because he's too busy working but, last Friday, they got the landline at last. Today he posted that the new arrival was due today and he could hardly wait.

It arrived at 8 o clock this evening and it's a little boy. It hasn't got a name yet - they want to "see what it's like" before naming it - but they are both ecstatic....
