Carpets and Sofas

Posted 16-08-2009 at 21:45 by West Ender

At last we got around to going and ordering a new carpet for Nik's room. The one that's down is nearly threadbare in parts and looks decidedly grotty after nearly 30 years. We also desperately need new doors on the bedrooms upstairs but it wasn't worth getting them until the new carpet's down.

We went to CarpetRight in Warrington and chose carpet and underlay which should be all fitted within a couple of weeks. I also looked at carpet for the sitting and dining rooms, which are connected by an archway. I know, more or less, what I want but I won't order until the redecorating is done. We are going to strip off the wallpaper and I want the walls re-plastered so we can paint them. Colin was brilliant at DIY, could do nearly...

Shooting Stars and Stuff.

Posted 12-08-2009 at 21:24 by West Ender
Updated 12-08-2009 at 21:26 by West Ender

I'm going to look out for shooting stars tonight when I make one of my trips to the bathroom. If I remember, that is, and if I'm not 90% asleep and on automatic pilot. This is the time of year for them and sometimes they can be quite spectacular though I doubt the Cheshire skies, with the glow of lights from Warrington and, even, Manchester will make them easy viewing.

I've only once seen a real meteor shower and that was about 25 years ago. Thinking back to it takes me back to happy days that are long gone and a lovely holiday in Wales.

We'd had a week in Somerset, in our touring caravan. There was Colin and me, our son Alan, who had just gone 17, and Nik who was 7. Our elder daughter, Jo, was 18 and had just finished...

Thank Goodness It's Not January

Posted 11-08-2009 at 18:25 by West Ender

I was quite late going to bed last night. It was after midnight when I switched things off, tidied things away and put the dishwasher on. I gathered up my oxygen tube, which reaches to my bed, and went upstairs. I have to have oxygen 15 hours a day so, in my case, that's 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. - roughly.

I'd cleaned my teeth and was washing my face when I heard the condenser boiler stop. It's in what used to be the airing cupboard in the bathroom. Of course, the water went cold. A quick look in the cupboard showed no lights on the boiler. It was dead. In my room my bedside clock/radio was dead too and from downstairs, faintly, I could hear my oxygen machine bleeping.

I trotted downstairs to the understairs cupboard where...

Ladies Who Lunch

Posted 06-08-2009 at 20:11 by West Ender

So we three, former tax inspectors, got together for lunch today. Irene and I have done it several times in the past year. I retired in 2007 and Irene, who is only 52 (just a kid, really ), got early retirement a year ago in the HMRC Big Changes - when they got rid of all the good, competent staff who knew their jobs inside out and replaced them with cheap new staff who know next to nothing. She's been looking for another job, ever since, but hasn't found one. Sue also got early retirement 2 months ago, but she's nearly 59 so it's not quite so early, so she's joined our "Lunch Club".

The three of us were at Warrington office for over 20 years and for my last 5 years there we worked together on Tax Credit fraud....

Peter's House Warming

Posted 31-07-2009 at 22:46 by West Ender

Last weekend my grandson, Peter, moved into the house he's sharing with his girlfriend, Claire. I can't say how old that makes me feel. This was my little golden haired angel, my beautiful boy, the apple of his grampa's eye, my pride and joy and here he is being all grown-up, nearly 24 years old, and talking about electricity bills and future mortgages.

The house belongs to Claire's father, who is divorced from her mother, who has moved in with his lady friend. He is renting the house to them with the option to buy in a few years. Tonight they held the first of two housewarmings - this was Wrinklies Night, to which I was invited, along with my elder daughter, who is Pete's mum, and her partner, Claire's mum and stepdad...
