Testing you out.

This is just the very start of the "book" I have been writing for 3 years. I am trying to write Harry, my father's, early life in novel form; believe me the story was harrowing. So far I've got up to where dad was newly adopted, away from his brothers, at the age of 9. By the way, Lizzie's my grandmother.

You must feel free to say if it's rubbish. I live far enough away to be unable to kick you.

There was a policeman at the kitchen door, talking to Mrs. Salt. Harry didnít take much notice. His younger brother, Teddy, had wet his britches again and was crying and Mrs. Saltís daughter, Nellie, was laughing at...

Festivals, Scarecrows Etc.

Posted 06-07-2009 at 21:11 by West Ender

We have an annual festival in our village. It lasts just over a week and incorporates all aspects of the Arts and various other things. It's been going for 10 years now and it's growing every year.

Over the last 10 years I've been to the Food Fest, which is always the first event - all the restaurants (and there are many) in the village have stalls in the centre, which is closed to traffic for the evening, and sell samples of their food that you eat al fresco. It's great because we have Chinese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Italian, Turkish and various English restaurants (all this in a tiny village centre that used to be full of useful shops). Sadly, last year it rained so hard I was soaked to my underwear - as was everybody else -...

....The Conclusion

Posted 24-06-2009 at 21:22 by West Ender

We had 6 Winters in Whitby and we were cut off from civilisation, for at least a few days, in 4 of those.

There are 3 roads out of Whitby. One goes to Scarborough, one goes (eventually) to Middlesborough and one climbs very steeply up on to the moors to Pickering and beyond. When the snow came it was never long before at least one road closed. If all 3 closed Whitby was isolated.

The worst cut off lasted a full week, during which the electric power lines were down for 3 days. Our houses on The Patch didn't have gas; we cooked with electricity and had one coal fire and electric radiators in bedrooms and kitchen. Three days with just a fire, a paraffin stove to cook on and a few candles wasn't a lot of fun. ...

The 60s saw a big surge in Folk music and a group of us decided to start a Folk Club in Whitby. We secured an upstairs room at the Plough Inn every Wednesday evening and it wasn't long before we had quite a large membership.

There were about 10 of us who were resident singers and 6 of us formed a group. We were 2 housewives (me and another) a teacher, the manager of Hepworth's Tailors and 2 RAF officers and we called ourselves The Ploughshares. We used to go to the Seamen's Mission (a bit like a Youth Club) to rehearse on a Monday. One of the RAF men, Will, and I also formed a duo where I sang and he played guitar. We used to give concerts around the place.

At the same time as this I also joined the Operatic...

Whitby...more

Posted 22-06-2009 at 19:06 by West Ender

That first Christmas Day sticks in my memory. We had gone home from the party, carrying 2 sleeping children wrapped in blankets, at about 4 a.m. but we were all up bright and early to see what Santa had brought.

Outside, the world was white and sparkling. After breakfast we had to shovel snow away from the front door as we set off to go to the phone box to ring Nana and Grampa in Blackburn. We didn't have a phone in the house, at the time, and the mobile wouldn't be invented for about another 20 years so we had to use the public box near the local shops. The snow was about 6" deep, not easy for little legs, and poor Joanne fell down outside the phone box and hurt her knee. We all talked to my parents then walked back...
