Whitby

I've lived here, in Lymm, for over 30 years. I'm happy here but I don't think I've ever been more integrated than I was when we lived in Whitby.

We moved to the town on October 21st 1966, the day of the Aberfan disaster, from Coventry. It was chilly up there on the North Yorkshire coast but my first view of the town from the top of Blue Bank, with the broad sweep of the North Sea as a backdrop, made up for that.

I remember waking up the next morning with my 2 small children in the bed beside me; their dad had already left for work at RAF Fylingdales, the early warning station up on the moors. My son, 16 months old, sat up and said, "Oogles, mummy!" as he heard the sea gulls screaming. It wouldn't be too...

First Flight

Posted 20-06-2009 at 21:35 by West Ender

We were totting up the number of times Laura, who is 9, has flown in a plane. I think we worked out that, counting each way as a separate trip, she's done it 16 times and each time to/from a destination in Europe. I was 12 before I went abroad for the first time and in my late 20s before I flew.

Big Bro 2 has a flat at St Annes, on the seafront, but before that, prior to 1985, he had a house in Ansdell. My parents used to spend a lot of time there, especially as my dad did a lot of alterations to the house (he was a very good bricklayer for an optician), and we used to visit from our then home in Durham City. There was a very good chip shop in Ansdell and Les Dawson was often seen sitting outside it, in his Jag, while his...

Lymm May Queen

Posted 13-06-2009 at 21:32 by West Ender

It was our May Queen day, today. Yes, I know it's June but May Queen is always in June, don't ask me why.

Every year a young girl is picked to be May Queen and another, a bit younger, is picked to be Rose Queen. They do it at the Village Hall where all the names go into a hat. The girls who hope to be picked have to be at the meeting and have to have lived in Lymm for at least 3 years. Once the queens are picked they have to have 6 attendants each, 4 flower girls, to give the very small ones a chance, and 4 boys to be crown bearers.

Our Laura was picked to be an attendant to the May Queen this year. Two years ago she was a Rose Queen's attendant but last year she was a bridesmaid at a wedding that day so we...

Hospital Morning

Posted 12-06-2009 at 22:32 by West Ender

I was at the hospital this morning, all morning. I had to have a couple of blood tests - glucose tolerance tests - to see how bad (or not) the diabetes is. It's a boring, hungry experience involving not eating or drinking (except water) for 12 hours before the first blood-letting then a peculiar-tasting sugary drink and, 2 hours later, another phial of blood.

My eldest daughter, Jo, took me in her "hairdresser's car" (her description), a bright red Peugeot 206 cabriolet. She wanted me to travel with the top down, as it was sunny, but I declined as I didn't want my ears blown off. Jo got the car 2 years ago as she'd always wanted one. She also has a great big, powerful motorbike that she rides all over the country...

On The Hole

Posted 08-06-2009 at 18:48 by West Ender

That neighbour of mine has gone so far up in my estimation he must be above chimney height by now. I'm beginning to wonder if he's a bit wary of kryptonite and has a fondness for telephone boxes.

Why do I think this? Well, I got up about 8 o clock this morning and ambled downstairs for my orange juice and a glance at the paper. I wandered over to the window and looked at the front garden, specifically looked at the hole, only I didn't - because it wasn't there. The earth was replaced along with the daffodil bulbs (still got the leaves on) and the 3 rose bushes. The paving next to it had been brushed and the fence panel between our 2 gardens replaced. You would not know anything had ever happened.

What I don't...
