First Love

I was 14 when I fell "in love" for the first time. Up until then I had had various crushes on popular figures; Elvis, Guy Mitchell, even a long-forgotten Scottish pop singer called Glen Mason who I idolised for about 6 months. Apart from them, my heart had only been touched by dogs and horses.

Then I met Rob who was 15, tall and well built, and had dark curly hair and nice eyes. I'd actually been aware of Rob's existence for a few years, as someone who lived in the village, but we only ever said "Hello". One warm Spring night after a dance at Church Conservative Club, though, changed all that when he asked if he could walk home with me. We walked along Blackburn Rd together until we got to my house and we stood...

School - And All That

Posted 30-04-2009 at 19:59 by West Ender

Now I'm not trying to go "head to head" with you here, Margaret. Your latest blog, though, has brought back a lot of memories for me. Not 60s memories, I've been there already, but school. I tell my granddaughter what primary school was like when I was her age and she finds it hard to believe. Mind you, when I compare it with today, it does seem hardly credible.

Who remembers St Mary's School on Moscow Mill St.? The building, built of stone and black like every other stone building in the area, was long and narrow. Some classrooms were only accessible through others and the widows were just high enough so that children couldn't see out. The school was heated by huge hot water pipes that ran all round the outer...

I Remember the 60s and I WAS there

Posted 29-04-2009 at 20:23 by West Ender

There's a saying, "If you can remember the 60s you weren't there." The implication is that most people in the 60s were on a permanent psychedelic pleasure trip and stoned out of their minds. The fact is that most people just weren't.

I was 17 in 1960. It was a good time to be a teenager (and my generation was the first to be called that), we had a "culture" of our own. My parents had spent the latter end of the previous decade, just like many other parents, recoiling in horror at Rock'n'Roll and wondering if Elvis Presley was really as unwholesome as he appeared. We dressed in our own fashions, though skirts were not yet short, and we had more freedom and more money than our parents had had with plenty...

Oil Lamps Anonymous

Posted 28-04-2009 at 20:53 by West Ender

I've got to curb this desire to obtain oil lamps. Is there an Oil Lamp-o-holics Anonymous branch anywhere within a 50 mile radius of me? Because, if there is, I need to go hammering on their door and stand up at the next meeting to say, "My name is Cath. I am addicted to oil lamps." The members at the meeting will then clap and murmer, "Well done," and I will sit down with a self-satisfied smirk.

Of course I blame Laura's friend, Savannah. If it hadn't been for her breaking my first, one-and-only, much loved but largely forgotten until brass-cleaning days oil lamp's shade and chimney, I would never have thought of buying any more. I would never have gone on Ebay and found how many beeeeauuuuutiful oil...

Out to Sea Aged 3

Posted 26-04-2009 at 21:24 by West Ender

I've written before about my much-loved aunt and uncle in Monkseaton but, yesterday, I was reminded of the very first time I can remember staying with them. It must have been 1946 because the war was over and the barbed wire had been removed from Whitley Bay beach. I was 3 years old and I can't remember going, coming back or even staying there, just one strong memory.

Uncle Vic, who was a Tax Inspector (it runs in the family), must have been at work and we had all gone to the beach with Auntie Emmie who was my mother's older sister. There was a man on the beach who had bought, or at least acquired, a DUKW and was giving rides out to sea. My dad took me and my 2 older brothers, paid for a ticket to ride and we set off....
