The Thing

Posted 22-02-2009 at 22:02 by West Ender

It was last Wednesday when the Thing flew in. Nik was just coming in through the front porch, it was about 6.30 p.m. and dark outside, and she hadn't switched on the porch light.

I was in the kitchen and she scurried in, shaking her shoulders and saying, "Ugh" as she did so.

"Oh you've got to come and look at this, Mum," she said. "I was in the porch, had my key in the inside door, when there was a very loud buzzing noise, like a motorbike, and this Thing hit me on the head and dropped on to the floor." She followed me down the hall and out to the porch watching, very carefully, over my shoulder.

"It's there," she squeaked, pointing to the carpet behind the...

Brownie Camp

Posted 20-02-2009 at 23:08 by West Ender
Updated 20-02-2009 at 23:12 by West Ender

There's only me and the cat at home this weekend. Nik and laura have gone on a Brownie Pack Holiday and it's a "first" for both of them. Nik's been a Brown Owl for 6 years and had been involved with Brownies, first as a young leader then as an Owl, since she was 16 but she got warranted to take girls on holiday just 18 months ago. She had been to a Pack Holiday weekend, at a place in Great Harwood, when Laura was only 3 but she only went for the day and only as a helper.

The place they've gone to is in Sandiway, near Northwich, only 15 miles from here. It's called the Pettypool Centre and it's about 20 acres of woodland and a lake with the most amazing activities there. There is a college for people with learning difficulties,...

Birthday Memories

Posted 18-02-2009 at 22:47 by West Ender

I only noticed the date this afternoon and it rang a bell as soon as I saw it. I remember birthdays etc. and today, February 18th, would have been Mavis's 74th.

My sister-in-law, Mavis, didn't fit the image that generally goes with that name. She was small (only 5' tall), slim, a natural blonde and very attractive with eyes of undiscernible colour that you could only call "black". She had the kind of skin that turned a deep golden brown after 10 minutes exposure to the sun and, as if all that were not enough, she was very intelligent - a primary school teacher and assistant head of her school.

Mavis came into my life when I was 14. My eldest brother had been going out with her for a couple of months but...

O2 - and that's not the phones.

Posted 17-02-2009 at 22:50 by West Ender

I'm back on oxygen. I saw the respiratory nurse at the hospital, yesterday, and this time I knew I had to agree to have an oxygen condenser at home.

I've been putting it off but I know my lungs are not grabbing enough O2 from the air so my heart hasn't been functioning properly without a tremendous effort. I'm not daft and I know that if my heart is overworked too much it will just pack its bags, pop its clogs and - well, Goodbye Cruel World and a good day for the florists.

I have to have the O2 for 15 hours a day so, really, it's not too bad. I'm not often out in the evenings so if I use it from 6 p.m. until 9 next morning, that's it. My machine is hidden behind one of the sofas in the sitting room and I have...

Bouquets and Bidding

Posted 15-02-2009 at 22:23 by West Ender

Well I didn't get the oil-lamp shade I was bidding for on Ebay, mainly because I don't keep the computer on all day and I didn't see I'd been outbid. Anyway there's another one, similar, so I'm bidding for that and I will be keeping a much closer eye out. I'm also bidding for a glass chimney as that was smashed too.

They don't come cheap. The shade I wanted went for 33 and I'm up to 15 already with the 2nd one. I've bid 12, so far, for the chimney. I've looked on the net for retailers selling these things and, yes, there are quite a few but they're all in the USA. I could buy both items but the total shipping costs would be at least 50!

Yesterday Nik and Laura got up quite early and went to the village...
