Any Ideas

I came across this detached building whilst walking, its at the back of Albert st Oswaldtwistle at the rear of one of the houses near the car park opposite st pauls school. It is about ten feet square and has a first floor and chimney, has anyone any idea what this building was used for?

What you think your doing taking a picture of the back of my house ................

ONLY JOKING!!!
dunno what it is but it looks like its falling down to me theres no roof slates on it, maybe it was a house for cleaners in the old days?? or a fancy outside loo!!
or a utility room??

Re: Any Ideas

Looks like a shed outbuilding with a storey on top - probably converted for some poor bloke who was kicked out of the house by his misses & set up building his residence in the mini house in the back yard

Just a suggestion

Re: Any Ideas

Total guess here, but...I think because it has it's own chimney, and therefore heating, it may have been used for light industrial purposes, something like a laundry? Lots of bigger houses around here were built with wash houses, and I'm just thinking this might have been run on communal lines, for the people who worked in the many mills in the vicinity. They do have similar things in Scotland.

Perhaps there may be some reference to it on the census?

I was trying to work out the number of the house from the map, but I think my eyes are going.

Re: Any Ideas

I asked my Grandad about this and he says that there was a builder lived in the house, and he built it practicing. He used it for storage and his kids played in it apparently. But it served no real purpose. He had been asked to build one for laundry purposes, but had never built one before so he had a practice in his own back garden.
