Rhyddings Park

With all the talk about the Park on here recently can anybody remember the lad who was one of the full time gardeners in the 50s, can't remember his name, but he started work their after leaving Rhyddings school I think. He then won a scholarship and went to work at Kew Gardens in London, he was a stocky lad with tight curly hair

Was it Mike Baron, the chap that runs this website

Michael's not old enough to have been working in the '50's, he's only a bit older than myself now.

No Park I know mike very well, we used to prop the bar up in the Stop many moons ago, he's in his mid fifties, this chap was around 24 when I was 10 or 11. Oh by the way nice to see you back, I was enquiring about you only the other week

Just a guess, and thank you for your comment. Have been busy over the past fews weeks + problems with PC

I lived on Hornby St from birth (1942) until 1961.
I spent a good deal of my childhood and adolescence in the park.
The only park-keeper I remember was a chap named Roland Hull.
He was short and stocky, walked with a limp, and had straight short blond hair. He was aged about mid 20s during the mid 50s.
I remember him well because there was a bit of scandal about him.
A girl in her late teens, bank managers daughter, lived on Park Lane, had a relationship with him and ended up marrying him, - don't think her dad was well pleased

This guy had tight dark curly hair Margaret, I can still picture him putting bedding plants in the flower bed just as you went through the front gates

If any mums are looking for something to do this afternoon - I'll be in Rhyddings Park with an artist and we'll be inviting young people to help us make a sculpture for the park. We'll be using twigs found in and around the park to make the sculpture but we'll need some help.

Between 12.30pm and 4pm. FREE
