Christine's Garden.

The programme Christine's Garden, BBC2 Friday evening at 8.00pm, is about a Lancashire lass.

It's a joyous programme, celebrating the delights of plants in what is quite an ordinary garden. Although she now lives in Essex, under the flight path of Stanstead airport, Christine Walkden was actually born and bred in Rishton.

Her enthusiasm, combined with her warm Lancastrian brogue, make this a must see programme for anybody with an interest in gardening, and makes a pleasant change from the quick fix with a bit of decking/make over type shows.

I heard her being interviewed yesterday on Radio 2, and she was suprised that the show as become such a big hit. It was also on the show that I heard her talk fondly about Rishton, and her Lancashire roots.

Re: Christine's Garden.

Yeah if you like gardening. Even if you don't it's nice to watch thirty minutes of summer weather, and she's a bit of a character.

So are you a bit of a character, but I don’t think I want to sit and watch you dragging your hoe for thirty minutes. Sorry...........

I was aware it was on and had heard her trailer on BBC Lancs, originally I was interested, but after hearing the clip over and over for the last few days I was quite but off.

Anyway my lady garden consists of a small bed, a window box, and loads of tubs, you'd soon get bored.

Re: Christine's Garden.

Last night's programme showed her coming back to her Lancashire roots.

It showed the house where she grew up in Riston, and where her Mum and Dad still live. She took over all the gardens in the street of her terraced home as a small girl, before she got her first allotment by the age of eleven. By thirteen she was secretary of the Rishton Garden and Allotments Association, organising the bi-annual shows.

She also returned to the Trough of Bowland, a place she used to search for plants. It must be one of the most beautiful places on earth, and thankfully remains an unknown secret to most of the country as they whiz by on the M6, on their way to the overcrowded Lake District.
