Where Has Church Gone?

looking at some old maps of the leeds liverpool canal and came across this! the trouble is i cant find churh on it!surely we where about when they decided to go through our town.

I just noticed the spelling of Whaley Fouridge and Coln. I wonder if they were spelt that way then or if they are mistakes by whoever drew up the map, which could partially count for the omission of Church too.

If you look on the top right hand corner of that map it appears to have the date Jan 1771. Around that time the canal had not been completed.

So probably this was a proposal of where the route for the canal could go, rather than the 'actual' route.

Yeah...the map is the original planned route. After construction started the usual thing happened with projects such as this - (this was the channel tunnel of its time) - they ran out of dosh. After a bit of argy-bargy and refinancing it was decided to run the route further south, where the importance of coal was just being realised.

Hence the canal rolls through Church, and not alongside the Ribble at Whalley.
