Hi,

Daisy Dairy came to be be as a result of the coming togather of NEL dairy (North East Lancashire Cooperative Dairies) in Oswaldtwistle and UCD (United Cooperative Dairy) based in Hyde, Cheshire.

NEL dairy supplied other dairies across the true county of Lancashire, such as as the cooperative society in Liverpool and had depots across Lancashire in towns such as Wigan where they did home deliveries.

UCD appeared to be the senior partner and consequently the Oswaltwistle dairy was closed in favour of the one at Hyde. This was disppointing really as it wasn't long before they sold out to Waterfords dairy who didn't last long either and Express dairy took over.

I have fond memories of NEL dairy and Daisy Dairy. I am currently looking to find some photos of the dairy and in particular their vehicles/milk floats. I have in my collection most of the many milk bottles they produced. They were in existence for some considerable time as I have a bottle of theirs from the 1920'S.

As kids we used to play out down at Daisy Dairy sometimes. We occasionally managed to sneak inside and I remember the huge machinery and noise before getting shooed out by someone working there. Kids used to end up with filched chocolate and strawberry milk from the pallets. It was all very exciting in those days. Happy times indeed.

My brother in law John Tregurtha worked there for many years until it closed.
One of his jobs was dealing with the tankers bringing milk in to be pasteurised and bottled.

Remember going there on a school trip. Was fascinated by all the machinery and stuff but they gave us all milk to drink at the end and if there's one thing I've never been able to drink it's milk on its own.

I learnt how to deal with skids in the car and van on the site, which was notorious for becoming like an ice rink. Also learnt how to reverse a trailer into one of the garages after the garage service moved out. Happy days.

I agree, they used to sell cartons of thick Daisy Shake in the local Spar. Banana was the best. Although I've been told by someone who used to work there that they were loaded with sugar. Who cares, they were brilliant! :D:D

my uncle tom keenan worked there as a milkman deliverer.he eventually bought the round off them.they also had a fleet of electric milk floats,damn nuisance if you got stuck behind one.i bet the neighbours where glad when they closed it down.

Hi, I am Ray Smyth, retired HGV Class 1 driver, and I live in Wigan.
My father, Robert Smyth (Bob), born 1913, worked as a milkman from
the age of 15 until his late 50s. He started with Greenbanks Dairy in the
Walton area of Liverpool, at first delivering milk from churns on a handcart
and then, still in his teens, driving one of their 2 ton lorries.
Sometime, just before, or just after World War 2, Greenbanks Dairies were
taken over by Liverpool Co-operative Dairies, they had a massive dairy at
Lockerby Road in the Fairfield district of Liverpool, so Dad was with the
Co-op until ill health forced him to leave and take an inside job with the
Liverpool Daily Post & Echo. Toward the end of his time with the Co-op
was when North East Lancashire Dairies took over in Liverpool. I would like to see any pictures of Co-op/NEL milk lorries from any period. I have a couple of pictures of Dad with his Greenbanks lorry, but I don't know how,
if possible, to post them on here. I do know how to send them to an email

worked there 72-73 delivering daisy dairy milk shakes nationwide to supermarkets, marinas and holiday campsites.
Got as far north as Aberdeen, inverness, Oban, fort William and loch ness and loch Lomond.
Only left to take up a job with BRS Blackburn
