doctors/medical fees before 1948
It every week or so the Govt. announces new fee schedules for various medical treatments , eye glasses, dentures etc. things that used to be free, It got me to wondering what kind of fees Doctors and Hospitals charged for treatment before the NHS was introduced in 1948,
Does anyone have aged parents or Grandparents who remember those days and how much they paid for services ? were the workers in the cotton industry covered by union plans ? were Howard and Bullough employees covered by a company plan etc . things like how much did a midwife charge Thanks |

Very off topic I know, sorry, but tonight on TV Panorama showed a film about how elderly people are being made to sell their homes to fund 'social care', when legally a lot of them should be recieving free care (funded by local authorities) on the NHS, after paying in a lifetimes National Insurance contributions. All shown against a clip of Blair nine years ago saying that his government was against old people having to sell their homes to provide long term nursing care in their old age.

I think it used to cost a shilling (5p) to visit the doctor, which was an awful lot out of little wages. The real problem with the NHS was that the funding was based on the use that people made of doctors and hospitals BEFORE it was introduced. It's not exactly rocket science to work out that people will make more use of something that is "free" than something they have to pay for, is it. It's been going wrong ever since .....
