Re: Not my kitchen window!

Coppice:-Trees or shrubs which are cut to ground level every few years and then regrow from the stumps into a clump of stems.

Pollard:-To cut a tree 2.5-4m above the ground to produce a close rounded head of young branches.

Re: Not my kitchen window!

The Old English word For Willow Is 'Withy'

A group of 'Withies' is known as a 'Grove' ,hence 'Withy Grove'

Allow for corruption over time.... and you get ....'Within Grove'

Any wiser?

Pollard St is a the bottom of Belgarth Rd so I thought it might be St Joesph's.

Re: Not my kitchen window!

Within Grove is a small industrial area up towards Huncoat. Accrington Cemetery would fall to the south westen tip of Within Grove.

Dare I say this? Is it the Chapel of Rest. at Accrington Cemetery....

Re: Not my kitchen window!

I have to accord half of the coconut to Bagpuss for the answer to where the window is.
Anyone care to enlighten us about the coat of arms?

If you look At the First edition OS 1:10000 map you will see that St. Augustines hasn't been built yet but it's position is between four farms Higher Brown Birks to the south, Lower Brown Birks to the north - ish Warm Lea and Within Grove, Both slightly to the West. However the whole area was given the name, based on Within Grove Cottage when the council estate was built.
