I am not entirely sure whether it ever had a function or whether it was intended to be purely decorative. But it isn't on a pub and it isn't attached to the Dunkenhalgh.
Hurrah! it is, as Uncle Mick says, situated at the east end of that delightful eighteenth century edifice at the heart of our town centre, St.James' Church. Well spotted!
Well fancy that! How many times must I have seen that without noticing it? I was even at the opticians right next to there this afternoon. Says a lot for my new glasses doesn't it?
