What's the story behind this?

Out for a wander today, before I succumbed to cold germs, I came across this. I won't say where it is and leave people to have a guess.

I know what it is now but I've no idea what it used to be when this was presumably a window. Perhaps one of you knows.

Is this the old wall where the road goes under the railway bridge at Church?

Re: What's the story behind this?

Yes that's where it is, but I have no idea what such an elaborate window could have belonged to. I was hoping someone like Atarah would know more about the history behind it. Does anyone?

I might be wrong about this one, and I'm not 100% sure where they are. But if I remember rightly there were some arches (window like - but no glass in them) where the passage went under the bridge as an access to the east bound platform at Church Station. That was the place that a crowd tried to lynch a convicted (or accused) murder in the early 1900 or the end of the 1800's.

Or maybe my minds just twitching!!!

Re: What's the story behind this?

Now that does sound sensible because the shape is so different to any house window which is what made me wonder at one point if it was anything to do with the Navigation Arms but I think that pub was closer to the crossroads.

I'll have to go and take another photo of the larger area.

Sounds like my mind ''twitching''(lol)when I thought those houses along Blackburn Rd Ossy were further along than the site of Daisy Dairies!

Re: What's the story behind this?

Hang on Willow, now I'm really confused. The railway bridge is the one on Market Street at Church & Ossy station.

The Navigation Inn use to back-on to the canal just past Bridge Street off Blackburn Road just past the Commercial.

Are we on the same tracks or at right-angles to one-another? Please put me out of my misery!!

Re: What's the story behind this?

We're at right angles!

When Gobsmacked said railway bridge I assumed he meant the one which crossed Blackburn Rd. (Where the road dips slightly and is always 'liable top flooding') The photo is on part of the wall along Blackburn Rd where there is emergency access to Blythes. I know that there are steps (which can no longer be used) up the side of the bridge and when you mentioned an archway to go through to get somewhere else it sounded reasonable but now I come to look at it again it isn't.

I did tell you my brain was having a twitch as well didn't I?

Re: What's the story behind this?

No, it's definitely not an archway. It's a window. You can see the windowsill on this first photo. It would only be wide enough for one person to pass through at a time if it were an archway.

I also went up Market St to what now remains of the railway station and this second photo is the archway there, which is much bigger and shows how much notice I don't take of things I pass by. lol
