Flood Awareness

Hi Everyone,

I am currently working on a project (Sustainable Water Environment in Lancashire) to raise awareness and help people prepare against flooding in Lancashire.

We are holding a drop-in in Accrington Library today to provide information and answer questions on flooding in the area. We'll be there from 2:30 until 6:30.

If you would like to find out if you are in a flood risk area, the Environment Agency provides maps: Environment Agency - What's in your backyard?

Please feel free to come and ask us questions or find out more today.

I hope this might be useful to some people here, but please ignore this post if you're not interested or don't find it relevant.

If the culvert under the town centre collapsed you may well experience flooding.

Re: Flood Awareness

May well have been more relevant to people if more notice had been given?

Wev'e already had one, back in the 1960's, every pump and every yard of hose we had from Accy & Ossy, pumps running flat out all night, made not one bit of diference till the culvert cleared, it just could'nt handle the amount of water that came down especially off the Coppice, Warmden & Woodnook.

Re: Flood Awareness

Sorry it was late notice, I didn't find this site earlier.

We anticipate to be holding more events in the area, so I'll post them when we have dates confirmed.

Many of the rivers through towns in Lancashire are culverted, so many people may not even be aware they are close to a river. Problems can occur when the culverts become overloaded with heavy rainfall, however other problems such as debris blocking an entrance could cause a flood.

We are firstly trying to raise awareness of flood risk, but also provide advice on planning for a flood and we would also like to help people form community flood groups. Community flood groups are useful so that the river is checked for debris regularly, and neighbours who are away/vulnerable can be helped or protected.

If you have any questions then I'll try and answer them here, or you can email [email protected]

Re: Flood Awareness

Just a little note to let everyone know we are holding more drop-ins in the Hyndburn Area.
We will be at Oswaldtwistle Mills during opening hours on the 13th November, and in the Conference Centre (behind the mill) between 2 and 6pm on the 14th.

Please call in and ask us any questions you have, or just to find out about flooding in the area

Can I bring some plans with me?
This guy Jehovah stuffed them through my letterbox with instructions of how to build an 'ARK'???
Unfortunately it's all in cubits measurement, I was trained for a metric system!

The list of animals by the way is horrendous, where am I going to find a breeding pair of Dodos?
