The Cubbies Have Made It!

My team has finally made it to the Series ... Last time they were there, I hadn't even been born! Last time they won it, my grandad was 12! The Chicago Cubs, everybody's favorite losers. Started supporting them after watching that great Canadian pitcher, Fergie Jenkins, throw a complete game at Wrigley Field. A great player. Loyal to one club. Cy Young award winner. Hall of famer. He could have gone to the Bronx and won World Series rings; but he stayed at Chicago. I guess there was a time when footballers did that, eh. For those who might be interested in cricket on steroids, the first game of 7 is in Ohio next Tuesday nite, with the Cubbies facing the Tribe. This might just be the year.

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

Not good for the Cubs .... lost 6-0 ... but there are six games to go, and this is baseball. Great pitching from Cleveland ace Corey Kluber, who set a Series record by striking out eight batters in three innings. However, as the great Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over till it's over."

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

Hey Eric,
I am watching the Series so I can see all the ex Red Sox players and management on both sides.
Terry Francona now 9 - 0 in World series games. (Pretty impressive?)
Theo Epstein (Brilliant building / rebuilding job with the Cubs)
Mike Napoli (Great Guy)
Andrew Miller (Repaired and rebranded by The Red Sox)
John Lester (First class Lefty)
John Lackey (Tough without as much talent)
Why can't the Red Sox get guys like that? (Joke)
I am enjoying the games whichever way they go. (Go Cubs though!)
Regards
Joe

P.S. Fergy played for the Red Sox too 76-77

And it's back to Wrigley Field ... all tied up. Talking about the Red Sox, the first series I watched was the '67 match up. On a black and white TV for chrissake. Someone helped me out by explaining what was going on. That Series got me hooked. How could it not?

71 years since the last time ... whatever happens, it's going to one helluva night in North Chicago.

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

I arrived in the States in the summer of '67.
I was taught the baseball basics by my friends to the tune of the '67 Red Sox.
The Cardiac Kids as they were known.
Been a faithful Sox fan ever since.
I was in Fenway Park at the '75 World Series. Damn the Reds.
I subscribe to the tribe that believes Game 6 of the '75 World Series was the Greatest Game Ever Played.
I was in Fenway for the '86 World Series only to have my hopes dashed.
(I still Hate the Mets)
Finally joy arrived in 2004 and '07 and again in '13
So there is a God!
Most fun was the 2004 Victory Parade through Boston.
I was there and all of New England showed up,
It was a massive regional and generational PARTY.
With Theo at the helm the Cubs day will come.

A great game. But how could it not be: Tiant, Bench, Fisk, Yastrzemski, Rose ... and all the rest ... let's not forget Morgan. The only pitcher I enjoyed watching more than I did Tiant was Tekulve.

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

Nowadays there are several that throw like Tekulve but he was the first I saw.
However NOBODY pitches like El Tiante (Rubber arm, 170 pitch game etc.)
Cubs are still alive !

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

Way to go Cubbies! The Cuban Flame Thrower shuts down the Reds. That last pitch ... winning the game with a 100 mph fastball. Gutsy move by Joe Maddon; but a manager has to gamble when he's down to two options: baseball or golf.

And so it all comes down to this.
Two Teams enter. One Team Leaves.
There is no tomorrow.
And every other baseball and battle cliche you can think of.
It has been a fun and dramatic series.
May the best team win.

Managing is going to be real important in the game ... As the great Yogi Berra said: "Baseball is ninety percent mental ........ "

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

Many Red Sox flashback moments tonight.
Including Jon Lester pitching to Mike Napoli and being caught by David Ross.
All Red Sox! All night!
LOL

Re: The Cubbies Have Made It!

Wow! What a game.
Cubs win IN SPITE of Joe Maddon's management.
He almost blew it for them a couple of times.
Lifting Lester?
Asking too much of Chapman.
Cubs fans can die happy.
All brought to you courtesy of the Boston Red Sox!
