Sherlock Holmes

Over the weekend TCM of satellite had a Sherlock Holmes weekend, all the old Bazil Rathbone Black and white movies. To me Bazil was the best Sherlock ever, and I still watch these old black and white offerings when they appear

Himself spent all the weekend watching these old black and white films.
I hate them............I was close to ending it all with a fruit spoon by the end of the weekend.
Thank god for Call the Midwife it was the only thing that gave me the will to live.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

It a close run thing but for me Jeremy Brett wins hands down as "The" definitive Holmes.

Haven't seen the more recent versions that have been on TV in the UK or the Robert Downey Jr /Jude law cinema versions - the latter seems to be very "Hollywood" and probably not my cup of tea.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

Basil Rathbone, simply brilliant.....however Benedict Cumberbatch does a darn good job of a modern day version.
The two are interchangeable, I cannot decide between either....

I thought all the films were in black and white (and silent) when you were young! :-)

Don't you like any b/w films Margaret? must say I prefer some of them to the modern stuff...

However I'm not keen on Sherlock Holmes at all in any guise whoever the actors.

Oh I don't mind some fo the black and white films Passport to Pimlico springs to mind....Kind Hearts and Coronets, Spring and Port Wine, Hobson's Choice. A Winslow Boy all damn fine entertainment......but not Sherlock Holmes....I hate those films, but himself loves 'em. Hence the torturous weekend. I wouldn't care but the majority of them he watched on the back of his eyelids

MoreJoe...if you read my post, which you obviously didn't, you would know that I don't dislike all Black and White films....just the Sherlock Holmes crap.........and Casablanca isn't one of my favourites either....or the Maltese Falcon.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

Who ever plays Sherlock, I don't think any body has ever taken the mantle of Watson quite like Nigel Bruce, he made that part his own and he and Bazil compliment each other very well
