Necroposting

I suggest making necroposting against forum rules. It is a pretty standard rule on most forums and it is weird that the rule is adopted here... for those that don't know necroposting is posting on a old topic bringing it to the top of the page... causes annoyance and confusion and any time where the old topic may be relevant it is easier for the thread poster to post a link to the old topic rather than each person who reads the thread reading messages not knowing they are old/having to search through the entire thread to find the new posts.

Another problem is topics going off topic to the point where they are an entirely different subject to that in the subject title.. there are several times where someone posts a new thread in the stanley forums relating to topic x only to be told it was already being talked about in the thread titled topic y.

These are just basic message boards rules that make the forums more functional for all and are generally pretty standard.

Old threads are New threads to new members and they are entitled to post in them, if they cant see the date top left of every post then they need glasses.
As for thread wandering that does happen and we let it go to some extent but do keep it in check so i really cant see a problem
the site has been going for quite a few years now and we have not had problems with members bringing up old threads its just part of the forum and is nice to see some of the old threads brought back up, there are some very good and funny threads lurking in the past that are worth bringing back now and again sorry but i really cant see a problem here
nobody has been confused over a thread as the date of each post is there to see
if your having problems please contact one of the mods/admin by pm and you can discuss your problem with them and sort something out that's what the staff are here for not just to annoy members with edit/delete/moving threads we do help occasionally

if the member that posts the second thread cant check if there is already a thread running on the subject then that's there problem and other members are just letting them know there is a thread already on going,
there is a search facility
its pointless having 2 threads on the same subject running at the same time and takes room up on the forum which is a waste
the mods in that section can merge the two threads into one if they have been running a while before reporting or noticed by the mod in that section
The thread that was started first is always the dominant thread and a second thread even if its started a minute later will be merged with the first thread

Re: Necroposting

Must admit mick it has never been a problem before (bringing up old threads) or necroposting, it's sometimes quite good seeing some of the old posts resurrected, brings back memories of when we used to have fun on here

Well said young man, I don't know how to post links On the subject of old posts it is great when they bob up again. In fact quite often people search for them

Re: Necroposting

Also, if the topic already exists why start a fresh one? Everything that can be said probably already has been said and if not can be added to the old thread.

Old posts aren't 'dead' posts....they are just hibernating, waiting until the interest in them resurfaces again..perhaps due to a news item....local or national.
As for thread wanders, well it is a strange conversation that doesn't meander along, touching other subjects along the way......it is a natural way of conversing.......I have to say that over the years some of the thread wanders have been as interesting as the original topic.

No......I like the forum just the way it is.

Re: Necroposting

Contrary to what Sam has said, I have been a member of many forums and some of them get really uppity if you do not search for a topic to post to instead of creating a new one.

It often saves having to re say everything that has already been said.
