What would sell and do well

What kind of stall do you think would do well on Accrington Market....
I know the market is not what it used to be.... and all that:

I am thinking of maybe setting up a stall and wondering what will sell:

Cheap food used to do really well... and pound stalls: ( However we have more than enough of that in the pound shops)

So just wondering what your thoughts on what would sell are.

Magpie: :)

Accrington Market should look to the likes of Bury and be open when the customers are there, what is wrong from a personal point of view is the market as a whole starts to shut down far to early, and some of the assistants give you that 'for gods sake dont come here look'. It's no good giving me that well we start work early excuse either, Bury Market I am informed has little or no storage facilities, and therefore foodstuffs are sold off cheap on there to clear out, thus the market is open longer and the not so well off as well as the have's can get a bargain. It is not what you market it's how you market your produce that counts, so take a leaf out of a decent market's book and apply it.

It's hard to know what would do well these days as Accrington as a shopping centre just doesn't seem to attract people any more.

I know what I like (stalls like Moonstorm and Native American stuff) but that doesn't mean that they would be successful or appeal to many more people than me.

You can't get too specialist or quirky because you might never sell anything. On the other hand we don't just want more and more of the same old thing over and over again.

One thing we don't have on the market these days and would probably go down well is a toy stall with things ranging from pocket money toys that kids can buy for themselves to bigger things that parents and relatives can buy as birthday presents etc.

Ironically my brother bought the stock of the toy shop in the indoor market when it closed. He opened a toy shop in Padiham but I'm not convinced it's doing that well. Everything kids want these these days are electronic and people would rather go to the chain stores for price than support a local retailer

I think that last statement sadly applies to a lot of things these days.

I thought about toys... but I don't think I could put up with ( little darlings) picking this up and that up and can I have that one.....

same goes for childrens clothing....

Keep your money in your pocket is the best advice I would give you.
Having had experience of both Accrington and Blackburn Markets and other markets throughout the UK, you work hard for very little money.
Market Rents have gone through the roof and many traders stand and dont even take the rent there is no point delaying the agony and staying after hours to make that up.
Most market traders on outside markets do not have the facilities to take credit cards, banks are reluctant to grant this facility to traders.
Go for a less know auction site where you can list for free - Tazbar or Ebid.and try to establish yourself on those. Ebay is far too expensive.

Do many people actually buy on Tazbar and Ebid?

Sorry Magpie - apologies for thread wander.

There's another thing I would like to see but it probably wouldn't be very lucrative - some kind of outlet for local artists and crafty people.

Problem is a lot of markets have gone too far down the cheap tat route to stand any chance of reversing the process and develop better choices/quality stuff.

No really... but I can see why you thought that:;)
I set up the web site to help bring people into the town and give the traders chance to get on line for little cost.... ( that bit is doing ok)

I just want to do something part time and earn a bit of money....

I used to sell and make the dried flowers but they are long gone out of fashion....

just want a few lines that I can stick in my car and sell then go home at five....

The new way to go would be to sell other peoples rubbish.
Car boots are all over the area (Including Accy Market)
You can buy or beg the stock much cheaper and the rents are £5 - £10 to
stand. You can finish at 3.00 pm and make more money than you ever would on Accy market.

I was thinking of your welfare in the previous post!

Thanks Roy.....

will take on board what you are saying.... the thing I don't like about car boot sales... flea market is all the bargaining for the price of things....

I am pretty much the price you see is the price you pay:

I guess I am a shy female :o:o
