clutch problem rover 414i
 

just wondering if anyone has had a similer problem.clutch pedel very high much higher than brake pedel i have got a bit of clutch judder when starting off in first gear if i get a new cluch will the pedel d go down.

Hello, usually clutch judder is through oil getting on to the friction plate. high pedal is also a sign of a worn clutch but to make sure is the clutch slipping? ie as you are driving are the engine revvs(on the tacho) raising but the the cars not actually getting anywhere. And the bitting point on the clutch will tell you whether you need a new one or not as it should be towards the bottom of the pedal.

bitting point is very high not so bad with revs a friend last night said the slave and master clutch cilinders self adjust and that is why the pedal has gone so high new clutch should sort it out

You seem to be having lots of car trouble matey!


A high biting point does not necessarily mean a worn clutch, it all depends on how well it was adjusted when fitted. There is normally an adjuster on the cable that can change this. Judder is as you say normally contamination of teh friction plates with oil.

Best test of a worn clutch is stick teh handbrake on tight, put car in third and try and set off (lots of revs). If the clutch comes up without the car moving its knackered. If it stalls(or drags teh back wheels in a FWD) then its OK.

Some cars do have pedals that aren't 'lined up' I seem to recall teh Rover 418 I had was like this. The Alfa I had had a lower clutch than brake. There is probably some adjustments on the pedal box but most people wouldn't bother.

there is no adjustment on pedal it is not a cable nothing but bloody car trouble this one is my sons

so clutch up, engine still running, car not moving? - yes = clutch gone
