Re: Lancashire accent

We are closer to Cumbria here, that makes it a bit different from East Lancashire. But not as Cumbrian as Kendal.

Careful John, if someone reads and then explains this to them, they may get grouchy.

This is probably a strange request, but I'm an actress and have a job coming up in which I have to do a Lancaster accent. I was wondering whether there are any films or TV programmes set in Lancaster (or somewhere nearby) that I could watch and have a listen to the accent? I'm a londoner, so a bit far away... Or maybe there are famous actors/comedians from the area who I could look up on youtube, just to hear them speak?

Any help greatly appreciated! I want to make sure I get the accent right!

Thanks in advance

Katie
The challenge you have, Katie, is that a Lancashire Accent is a very generic term and as such (and on the basis of the historic county boundary) there are a number of quite distinctive accents. Scouse & Mancunian to the south; Wigan, Bolton, Oldham are all different to the trained ear; South Lakes & North Lancs and North East Lancs are different again. However, I suspect the accent you are seeking is one which is strong on rhoticity and as such Accy is the best place to look.

You are in London as are a number of contributors to this website (my self included) so if you want a conversation over a pint and to pick up both the subtle and obvious nuances than let me know. There's a facility to send a private message.

She's looking for a Lancaster accent not a Lancashire accent. Why should she want one from Accy?
