Modern art, art or just a big con ?

ok, was browsing the BBC world news and this item caught my eye
BBC NEWS | Europe | Painting meets its femme fatale

seemingly some nutter is up on charges in France for defacing a piece of contempory art ,worth nearly £1 million by leaving a lipstick smear on it .........the item is described as an 'immaculate white canvas' and this woman kissed it , leaving a lipstick smear ........so someone please tell me how an unpainted canvas is supposedly worth one million £'s ?
Maybe I am a philistine but my idea of 'art' is a Baby Jesus and Madonna , or a Lowry, even the 'Jade Girl' by the russian guy has more artistic merit than an 'immaculate white canvas'.
So who are these folks and what qualifications do they have who set themselves up as arbiters of taste and public art ........

responses expected from at least two of our Accy web members

I presume it was painted white as opposed to being an unpainted canvas but even so I too fail to see how it can be described as art.

Come on Steeljack, you've had exactly one hundred years to get used to Modern Art, as it was in 1907 that Picasso exhibited what is considered the first modern art work 'Les Demoiselles D'Avignon'.

As soon as I get the wallpaper on the walls in the living room we will have four of those paintings. I was wondering what to call them so I'm thinking of Duluxius Emulsionious, would that be fitting for such works of art ?

There's art and there's 'Emperor's New Clothes' art. Sometimes people are afraid of saying what they think for fear of being thought a Philistine.

Most art critics hate the painting by Scottish artist Vettriano, that Steeljack has as his avatar at the moment, even though commercially he is one of the most commercially sucessful painters of the age.

Art is really just a concept that induces an emotion.

I think Ms. Rindy's kiss is art.

I can go along with what you're saying to an extent but draw the line firmly at a plain blank white canvas. I see no artistic value in that whatsoever.

I agree, it show's very little imagination. Solid colour canvases were first exhibited over eighty years ago, when the Dadaist Francis Picabia exhibited his blank canvas L'Oeil cacodylate in Paris in 1921.

I met him in the Armani shop in Milan, and he took me for tea.

We didn't talk about art.
