The A556 goes from Bowdon to Northwich. The A56 goes from Altrincham to Lymm, and eventually to Chester, and it's only 2 lanes (1 each way) from Bowdon roundabout, through Lymm, to Stockton Heath. How do I know? I've lived in Lymm for 32 years.

We have a simpler system .... if you are out of the city it is a highway, and in the city it is a street. KISS.

I know that .... over nine million sq. kms .... but much of it doesn't have any roads at all .... lots of places can only be reached by air or water, or by ice roads in winter.
