Phew...what a pong!

On Tuesday I did something I swore I would never do.
I cooked finnie Haddock for himself and my next door neighbour.
Cooked it in milk and used the milk to make a parsley sauce.
They had it with New spuds and French beans (ooh la-la).
Both of the chaps said it was delish....wiped their plates clean...not a scorrick left of the meal....except for the smell that is.

I have used air freshers, joss sticks too...but the pungent pong is still lingering.
Anyone out there have any sure fire tips to get rid of the nasty niff?
All suggestions gratefully received as he would like to have this dish again...but as things stand....it is unlikely.

Re: Phew...what a pong!

Hi Margaret, from the web, try boiling vinegar and water together for several minutes. Havent done it myself so you may swap fish smell for vinegar smell. There was also a suggestion to add lavender to the water
Good luck,
Mark

Thank you Mark...will try that and report back.
If it works they can look forward to a repeat of the fish....if not then it will be off the menu.
I am doing Salmon today....so after that....it will be a vinegar trial.

The only cure for the aroma, not smell of Finny Haddock done in milk as you have stated Marge, is to another pan of the same.

Finny haddock has always been one of my favourite fish dishes.

That is unlikely if I cannot get rid of the pong.
Himself can 'long' all he wants.

I have given the vinegar trick a go....it does seem to have made a little difference.
I am hoping that by making a family sized lasagne(from scratch)...the smell of the Haddock will be replaced by the smell of garlic.

You also made it for your neighbour very thoughtful but next time, cook it in your neighbour's kitchen.

Re: Phew...what a pong!

Take it outside and do it on the B.B.Q. Margaret, cook it the same just use a different heat source. When I do salmon I always use the B.B.Q. but do it in foil.

Oh OssyKid....I don't do barbecues.
I have some very lurid memories of barbies done when we visited Oz...and frequently they did not end well.

Now, Morecambe Ex Pat....why didn't I think of that?
Probably because my next door neighbour did not know he was getting a fish tea...it was a spur of the moment thing.

Anyway, I found the cure for Eau de Haddock....it is to,replace one pungent odour with a different one.
Today I did a very garlicky Lasagne....so that is the aroma of the moment.
The Vinegar boiling in a pan did seem to take away some of the pong of fish.

Thanks Son....I will keep that article for future reference... the garlicky Lasagne seems to have beaten the finnie Haddock.

I would if they did finnie Haddock with parsley sauce.

Re: Phew...what a pong!

I think that Kippers and finnie Haddock must be cousins then.
They both stink the house out....even this boil in the bag versions.
Once you let the fish out into the open the pungent pong clings to everything.
