Post boxes

As I posted a letter today I wondered why some post boxes are round and some are square. This was the first square post box Busman was ever aware of having seen I think.

Anybody know why the different shapes? Is it purely a size thing? Oh, and while we're at it, what about those appendages some of them have?

Re: Post boxes

I thought it might have been put there when George was still on the throne, but that thought was dashed when I saw the EIIR on the front.

I have only ever seen one with a G on it, and that was in a village just outside of Maidstone in Kent

Re: Post boxes

Probably just a style thing, whatever shape was fashionable when that particular box was made.

Re: Post boxes

Think the appendages are a secure storage place for more mail;think the postie goes back to there and picks up post rather than back to the depot.

Re: Post boxes

I keep meaning to ask a postman friend of mine about that but keep forgetting.

Ever since you mentioned the "VR" Staggeringman I've been trying to find another one - so far without success.
