What time do your kids go to bed?

I ask my 12 year old to go to bed at 9:30pm. She objects that this is too early. We have a row about it.

She has to get up at 6:30am.

Am I being unreasonable?

No, Willow you are not being unreasonable.......I think I was 15 and going to bed at 9:30...Ok it was a long time ago, but children haven't changed and they need their sleep.

Yes I went to bed at 9:30 whilst I was at school up to being 16 but she doesn't seem to want to believe that.

She reckons 'everyone' stays up much later.

Then tell her you are not interested in 'Everyone'....everyone lives somewhere else......and I'll bet if you contacted the parents of her friends they would tell you that their children use the same ruse to stay up.

I've told her I'm not interested in 'everyone' and she's upstairs right now feeling victimised.

That's par for the course with teenagers.

8 hours sleep for a 12 year old seems reasonable to me.

Willow stick to your guns, she is just testing the boundaries...which is what all children do.

Re: What time do your kids go to bed?

I'm going to buck the trend here and say that I'm not convinced there is a bedtime for age. Guidelines maybe but it does depend on your child. Mine has always been a late to bed for her age but I rarely have problems getting her up in a morning. If I thought it was affecting her then I would be stricter

Mine are a lot younger but I strongly believe in a set bedtime - stick to your guns.

Re: What time do your kids go to bed?

Having 6 children ranging from 1 - 16 I agree Willow stick to your guns. The 16 year old goes when she feels like it (generally around 10ish), 14 year old goes between 9:30 - 10 and the others are all in bed by 9.

Personally I think 9:30 is late for a 12 year old.

She is pushing though, probably so she can "look cool" at school by being late to bed.

Usually 9:30/10:00 on a school night, and even then she reads till later ! At weekend I give her free reign and she has usually more stamina than me ! It will be different come Sept when she has to get up for a bus, she has been spoilt by living 100 yards from school !

Sounds the same as mine, although she is used to being out of the house for school at 8.15 so an extra five minutes earlier should be a piece of cake lol
