Set your price - stick to your price.
If they dont want to pay it tell them to "Sod off".
You can get away with that on a car boot.

If you fancied doing food we could really do with a good delicatessen;olives, salami, pate etc ,that kind of thing. I know we have a couple of specialist cheese stalls but I reckon you could do well on the tapas side of things;maybe freshly ground coffee and specialty teas.

Re: What would sell and do well

I have to agree with Lindsay about the tapas, there's not enough of them available in Accy plus it would make a nice (and healthier) alternative to all these pie & kebab shops that are springing up.Bring 'em on,i love 'em

i`ll second the last 2 suggestions , me and the missus are always saying a good deli style stall would be great....olives, sunblush tomatoes, vine leaves, sausage, pickled garlic, meats....etc etc

I just love second-hand book stalls. The only thing that gets my attention at a market.

Plenty of books on car boot sales at little money.
Why are the towns market organizers not defending their positions.
Why are the rents so high?
Would you be prepared to give the call to supermarkets who kill of local markets?
Should we bother?

Why has Blackburn got such a fantastic thriving market in comparison to our dwindling one?

Warrington has a somewhat dwindling market but the stalls that do most business are the sandwich stalls. There are two, both selling pre-made and made-to-order sandwiches, locally baked pies (hot and cold) and cakes.

Proborbly too much competition from the numerous bakeries already in Accrington.

Re: What would sell and do well

I would like to see a good ladies' underwear stall, selling lots and lots of different coloured bras and knickers. Although VBS (visible bra straps) has been voted the 'no no' of fashion, I still think it is acceptable with the stringy tops, and if it matches then looks really pretty to me, and more and more young people are abandoning the white or black only attitude.

Have to either go to Debenhams or La Sensa in Manchester to obtain something like this, as even in M & S are rather dull.

Could be a sort of Anne Summers of the market .. without the sideline products of course .

Re: What would sell and do well

I'd back the delicatessen idea, the health food and sasparilla stall on Blackburn market seems to do well although its mainly folk who want pints of sasparilla!!,but coinage is coinage...
I wonder if a game (the pheasants etc type ) stall would be an idea? game is apparently lower in fat-it could attract the dieters among us? its different anyway!

Blackburn Market has been going downhill for many years.
Rising rents and mismanagement (Too many chiefs and not enough Indians)
Butchers,Fishmongers,Greengrocers and many other good local produce retailers have gone. These people are the lifeblood of the market and when they go other traders will suffer.
Blackburn as with Darwen, Accrington, Clitheroe along with other small markets in the area are all council controlled and in the main used as a political football between the ruling councilors and the wanabees.
All these markets are supposed to earn money for the council and that is the primary objective, but,the cost of running these markets, because of interference from people who could not do a business plan for a wheelbarrow, puts the markets in decline.
Sell the franchise to a private market operator with a stipulation that market rents only rise with the cost of inflation, let the traders sell what they want. (Supermarkets do) Competition will find its own level.
I could go on but I guess you get my drift.
