Where do you keep yours

Was watching BBC Breaky this morning and they had an item on about where to keep food so it lasts longer before you munch it, I was surprised at some of the things.
Apples in the fridge not the fruit bowl, last 14 days longer
Eggs in a cool place not the fridge and store pointed end down
Bananas hung up away from other fruit
Bananas next to other fruit will help ripen them
Tomatoes in a cool place not the fridge, will last longer and taste better
Cheese in a cool place not the fridge
just another a few other things that surprised me, don't put lemons in the fridge, they make everything smell of melon, If you open the jam jar and the jam has fungus on it, don't throw it away, just scrape the fungus of (a chef said that) put peppers an onions in the freezer, they keep a long time and are very easy to cut up. Have you any other tips on food storage

Re: Where do you keep yours

my apples, kiwi, lemons, oranges and mango all go on the side in a fruit bowl, bananas dont go in there because they go black if you put them all together

eggs go in the fridge although i was told a while ago that you shouldnt put them in the fridge (but why when you buy a fridge do they have egg trays in them? go figure)

toms go in the fridge

spuds go on the side, open in a huge dish i have

carrots go in with the spuds

and DONT EVER put tins in the fridge when opened, the coating on the inside of the tin errodes when at a certain low temperature and can make you very ill, always empty the contents into a bowl and cover before refrigerating

Tins are lined with Fennel, which can be very nasty, which is why I don't use many cans, as I have an allergy to fennel

Re: Where do you keep yours

I keep all my fruit in the fridge other than bananas, they go in the cupboard (I like my worktops to be left clear) I dont like leaving food out on the sides, my kitchen seems to get the sun (when we have any) all day and can get quite warm so things tend to get warm if left out. Eggs go in the fridge. Never put an open tin can in the fridge, it always gets put in a plastic container before going into the fridge. If they're is mold on the jam then it goes in the bin (Just couldnt stomach the thought of eating it when it has been mouldy) Other than potatoes all veg also goes in the fridge. Everything else (other than frozen foods) get stored in the cupboard, its how ive always done it. Often "fresh" foods never last long enough in my house to go off anyway lol

Re: Where do you keep yours

I always leave mushrooms in brown paper bag that they come in, they last longer. Anything that gets to the back of my fridge becomes frozen so never a great idea to put lettuce/tomatoes that far in.
Blue/veined cheese is edible for years and years, ignore the dates, it's meant to look at you and wink, it's fine!

Re: Where do you keep yours

The fruit bowl on the dining table always has apples, oranges and grapes. They don't last very long as we tend to graze on them, after meals, so no problem of spoiling. Bananas are kept on a spike next to the kitchen fruit thingy, which holds things like kiwis, lychees (mine - all mine!) and passion fruits.

I do keep eggs in the fridge, though I know it's better not to, and tomatoes too because if the weather is warm they very soon go "off". I store potatoes in a cupboard but carrots and greens go in the "salad crispers" in the fridge. Avocados also live in the fridge because they go off fast and strawberries and other soft fruits go in there for a maximum of 2 days. If we haven't eaten them by then they're manky.

Cheese - definitely in the fridge but in an airtight box. Jam and fungus - I've been scraping it off for years, not that we get it that often, but I don't tell Nik as she wouldn't eat it if I did.

Cheese in a box? I know mine's ripe when I can hear it knocking on the door to get out!

Genius! Plus your fridge is probably too crammed with beer and moose to get any fruit in anyway!
