362 Union Road

According to the 1901 Census my husband's great-grandfather, Francis Slater, lived at 362 Union Road, Oswaldtwistle, and was a shopkeeper working from home (Coffee House) as a Potato and Fish Cooker. Recently checking this address we find it is now Moorend Chippy. Can anyone please tell us if these premises have been a Chip Shop ever since great-granddad's time? Amazing, if so! (In 1901 next door (364) was a Grocer's Shop - Sandy Rawcliffe).

Re: 362 Union Road

What's now our family bakers, at 325, has been a bakery since just after WW1, but was also a chip shop in 1901.

Certainly 362 has been a chip shop since the fifties, so it's more than probable it's been in continual use as a fish and chip shop since your great-grandfather's day.

Re: 362 Union Road

I know this is an old thread but just had to add to it. Arrived home today after being in the UK for a few weeks on holiday, first visit back after almost 55 years in South Australia. We made sure we had fish and chips (and other yummy stuff) at this shop in Union Road and very nice it was too. Felt a bit funny knowing that 'his' great-granddad had cooked fish and chips there all those years before.
