My husband Colin Wood went to Woodnook 1954-58 he walked to school with Mick Pettifer, and back with John Davies and Stewart Slattery both have passed away in recent years. Somebody mentioned Tony Finn sure he passed away he used to have his dinner in the cafe in the Arcade. He remembers Alf Hockett also cause they both had red hair, both Mick P and Alf H live in Canada now he thinks.

Hello Christine Spud.
Sorry I could not reply sooner. Have more trouble getting on this accy webb, it thinks, it is Fort Knox. Yes I remember Colin very well, and John and Stuart.Got in touch with Alf Hockett. We both live in Ontario Canada. He lives about 150 miles away from me. Alf has a farm and guest house.but he calls himself John Hockett.Last time we were in Accy I saw John Davis, he said he had cancer. Then I read he died in the observer.

I was At Woodnook from 1958 to 1963, I still have a football team photograph of the Woodnook School Football team of the 1962/63 season with your brother Roy, Pat Varley, Jack and John Duckworth among others.
Please remember me to Roy if he is still going, (of which I hope he still is).

I was at Woodnook until 1962. Roy southern was in my Year.
Mr Gale was my form master in my second year....I do not have good memories of him he was a portly bespectacled man who liked to use the cane.

Mr Milton Suthers was an inspiration to any lad who was prepared to muck in and try his best to be the best under his tuition at any form of sport but woe betide you if you tried to pull a fast one on him.
As for Miss Croston, (probably straight out of teacher training school) and very attactive, also not much older than the 14/15 year old lads she was attempting to teach, who were full of testosterone; she had a hard time getting her male pupils to concentrate on their lessons shall we say.
As this is a family site I cannot express it any stronger.:p:p
Your's as always, Taddy.

Re: woodnook sec school

Yes you are right about Miss Croston...the boys were unruly and had her in tears more than once.
She was my form teacher in the third year and the girls in her class felt very sorry for her and we collected the magnificent sum of ten shillings and sixpence and we went on the Market and bought her a fashionable bag to put her classroom notes in.
She taught English and art...in fact she did a picture of me in oils.
My sister took this back to Brisbane when we cleared Ma's house.

Re: woodnook sec school

I went to Rhyddings but knew you lads as I lived on Rydal Close......
Robert Mitchell......
I remember we used to knock about and roamed everywhere getting up to all sorts of stuff. Roland made some ‘devices’ using his ‘chemistry skills’ and we even had a copper wire and syrup tin telephone between our back bedrooms! I remember Roland’s dog called Chum.
The weeks before bonfire neet used to be exciting as we collected tons of wood and raided each other’s developing bonfires. Train spotting also comes to mind on the bridge down Bolton Avenue...
Lots of happy times guys.:alright:

I am afraid that I have to alter the above statement to read, ( I was at Woodnook from 1958 until 1962), not 1963 as I first stated, it was only after reading Margarets post that I realised that we were both in the same class for the last two year's; thanks for reminding me Marge.
As ever, stay happy, Your's, Taddy.

At least, I think that is correct but as my 15th birthday fell in early February I think that I left in Easter 1962.

That sounds right Taddy.

I left in July 1962...I did not turn 15 until June.

Re: woodnook sec school

I attended Woodnook Secondary School from 1954 until 1958. I remember most of the teachers mentioned in previous messages except Mrs. Croston.

When I was in the 1- 3 Class the Headmaster was Mr. Garnett, he was a real brutal Teacher/Headmaster. He was succeeded by Mr. Allen Whom we helped decorate his new home at Harwood Bar.
The Art teacher was Miss Atherton, the music teacher was Miss Tattersall (I think).
Mr. Gale had just started when I was in my last year, same as Mr. Allen.

Cheers

Philip Kenyon

Two more teachers have come to mind, Mr Wade, who (I think),taught Geography and Mr (Norman), Booth who was our Wood Butchering Teacher. To give the man his due, he did teach me how to make a splended guitar. He also taught John Duckworth how to build a full size canoe, both couldn't have been an easy task whilst having to keep a class under control who mainly just wanted to lark about.
Your's as ever Taddy

Do you know Taddy, I was racking my brains to remember Mr Booths name....I could see his face and I knew his surname began with a B...but could I remember what it was??
No I could not.

I remember Mr Wade too.

I think he also taught science too....I recall him giving Roy Wallace a taste of the slipper for playing with the gas taps in the science room.

That said, the science taught to us is probably covered by Junior school children now...it was very basic.

I cannot remember Mr Wade teaching science but then again I could and maybe very wrong, as for the slipper, that may have been the tool of correction for the girls but both Mr Wade and Mr Suthers used a six inch piece of Vee belting on the lads. (ouch).
But it did us no harm and I never did hold a grudge.
Your's Taddy.

Your's Taddy.

In fact I can remember Mr Wade asking the class for a name to christen his mode of punishment, when I said how about "Percy Wader", he was so taken by my answer, that he gave me a couple of house points,( at least I think thats what they called them).

Margaret Pilkington 10-08-2019 19:22

Re: woodnook sec school

Yes it was his tool of correction....I cannot recall it being different for the girls...in fact, I can't remember any girl getting punished by him

I remember Mr Suthers giving out the cane(though I guess it could have been Vee belt).
I know he was a dead eye with a peice of chalk...or if he was really irritated with you....a wooden backed black board duster.
He scared tHe bejasus out of me...and I always though he looked a lot like King George(the queens father)...must have been the beard...parted in the middle.

Margaret Pilkington 10-08-2019 19:26

Re: woodnook sec school

Yes they were house points and it was ten you needed to get on the Honours board...but you only needed four minuses to get on the dishonour list.

I think the awarding of minus house points was a way that Mr Allen tried to reduce the physical punishments so beloved by teachers of our era.

Mr.Suthers was also very quick to use an old Plimsol and if you missed vaulting the horse then you,d get it across you backside , his favorite drill was having us run out in the yard when it was frosty weather in just our gym shorts .
